The Annual Session of the American Association of Endodontists was held in Chicago April 10 to 14, 2002, and several endodontic faculty and residents attended and participated in various activities.

Mahmoud Torabinejad, DMD, MSD, PhD, professor and director of the endodontic residency program was installed as the president-elect after having served as vice president during the year 2001–2002. He also serves as trustee of the American Association of Endodontists Foundation, a major research funding source for endodontic projects including many done by Loma Linda University School of Dentistry endodontic residents. In addition, Dr. Torabinejad co-authored two research presentations and was a speaker at a program on evidence-based endodontics.

Presenting research abstracts were a recent graduate, Erol Apaydin, DDS, PG’01, and faculty member Shahrokh Shabahang, DDS, MS ’97, PhD’01:

Of particular interest, during the research presentations at this Annual Session, was that of the 124 papers presented, 15 papers (12%) involved MTA, a dental material—mineral trioxide aggregate—developed at LLUSD department of endodontics by Dr. Torabinejad.

One of the invited Principal Sessions was presented by Leif K. Bakland, SD’63, professor and chair, department of endodontics: “What Every Endodontist Should Know about Dental Trauma.”

Dr. Bakland also chairs two American Association of Endodontists committees: Oral Disease, Endodontic Treatment and Systemic Disease; and the Task Force on Guidelines for Treatment of Dental Trauma.

Department faculty serve on various American Association of Endodontists committees:

Steven G. Morrow, SD’60, MS’87, Constitution and Bylaws.

Shahrokh Shabahang, DDS, MS’97, PhD’01, Research and Scientific Affairs.

Robert J. Frank, DDS, Continuing Education, and Endodontic Workforce Assessment.

Tanya Machnick, DDS, resident in endodontics, serves on two committees: Public and Professional Activities Committee and student member of the Strategic Planning Committee

During the Annual Session, the Honors and Awards Committee voted to select LLUSD faculty member, Dr. Shahrokh Shabahang to be the recipient of the 2003 Edward M. Osetek Educator Award. The award will be presented to Dr. Shabahang at the next Annual Session in Tampa, Florida, in April, 2003.
