The Annual Session of
the American Association of Endodontist held in Chicago

The Annual Session of the American Association of Endodontists
was held in Chicago April 10 to 14, 2002, and several endodontic faculty
and residents attended and participated in various activities.
Mahmoud Torabinejad, DMD, MSD, PhD, professor and director of the endodontic
residency program was installed as the president-elect after having served
as vice president during the year 20012002. He also serves as trustee
of the American Association of Endodontists Foundation, a major research
funding source for endodontic projects including many done by Loma Linda
University School of Dentistry endodontic residents. In addition, Dr.
Torabinejad co-authored two research presentations and was a speaker at
a program on evidence-based endodontics.
Presenting research abstracts were a recent graduate, Erol Apaydin, DDS,
PG01, and faculty member Shahrokh Shabahang, DDS, MS 97, PhD01:

Of particular interest, during the research presentations at this Annual
Session, was that of the 124 papers presented, 15 papers (12%) involved
MTA, a dental materialmineral trioxide aggregatedeveloped
at LLUSD department of endodontics by Dr. Torabinejad.
One of the invited Principal Sessions was presented by Leif K. Bakland,
SD63, professor and chair, department of endodontics: What
Every Endodontist Should Know about Dental Trauma.
Dr. Bakland also chairs two American Association of Endodontists committees:
Oral Disease, Endodontic Treatment and Systemic Disease; and the Task
Force on Guidelines for Treatment of Dental Trauma.
Department faculty serve on various American Association of Endodontists
committees:
Steven G. Morrow, SD60, MS87, Constitution and Bylaws.
Shahrokh Shabahang, DDS, MS97, PhD01, Research and Scientific
Affairs.
Robert J. Frank, DDS, Continuing Education, and Endodontic Workforce Assessment.
Tanya Machnick, DDS, resident in endodontics, serves on two committees:
Public and Professional Activities Committee and student member of the
Strategic Planning Committee
During the Annual Session, the Honors and Awards Committee voted to select
LLUSD faculty member, Dr. Shahrokh Shabahang to be the recipient of the
2003 Edward M. Osetek Educator Award. The award will be presented to Dr.
Shabahang at the next Annual Session in Tampa, Florida, in April, 2003.
