Loma Linda students attend
ASDA-ADEA Student Lobby Day
By James Gibson, D3
On March 20, 2002, 144 dental students from the nations
55 dental schools attended the ASDA-ADEA Student Lobby Day in Washington,
D.C.
Nathan Dinsbach, D2, James Gibson, D3, and Dave Wilcox, D2, represented
Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, and met with U.S. Senators
and Congressmen from California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah to lobby for
dentistry related bills and budget apportionments.
The main focus of Lobby Day was The Childrens Dental Health Improvement
Act, (H.R. 3659 and S. 1626). These bills, if passed, would provide support
for improving dental access for children from low-income families.
Another focus, The Student Loan Flexibility Act of 2001, (H.R. 3273) is
a bill that, if passed, will eliminate the single holder rule
in the Federal loan consolidation program.
The ADA also recommended budget apportionments of $15 million to Title
VII, which would provide funds for various loan repayment programs such
as the Faculty Loan Repayment program and the General Dentistry and Pediatric
Residency Training, $19 million to the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Dental Reimbursement
Program, and $191 million to other important programs such as the National
Health Service Corps, Community Health Centers, and Indian Health Services.
Overall, the 2002 ASDA-ADEA Student Lobby Day was a huge success, informing
the nations lawmakers of critical legislation and petitioning their
support.
