LLU faculty, alumni, and students are active in the American Association of Endodontists
by Leif K. Bakland

Dr. Torabinejad
Mohamoud Torabinejad, DMD, MSD, PhD, professor and director of the graduate program in endodontics, is the new treasurer for the American Association of Endodontics.
The annual session of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) was held in Atlanta, April 21-25, and was attended by almost 3,000 endodontists and guests, including several graduate students, alumni, and faculty from the School of Dentistry's department of endodontics.

Presenting research reports were two recent graduate students and a recent fellow:
Geoffrey Okada, DDS, PG'98, and assistant professor: Modulation of Replacement Root Resorption.

Douglas H. Snider, SD'83, PG'98: Effect of Root Canal Obturation and/or Coronal Seal on the Success of Root Canal Therapy.

Dr. Chomquan Tongbaiya, (Thailand), fellow in endodontics'98: Durability of .04 Taper Rotary Ni-Ti Files After Simulated Clinical Usage.

Attending the various sessions were the current graduate students: Drs. Silvia Cecchini, Lynn Diaz, Keith Komatsu, Kurt Marcks, Nooshin Noghreian, Sony Thomas, and Johnathan Wee.

A lecture on The Endodontist's Role in Dental Trauma was presented by Leif K. Bakland, SD '63, professor of endodontics. The topic was a subject of press releases which resulted in informational articles subsequently published on how to save avulsed teeth and how to prevent dental injuries through the use of mouth guards (The New York Times 4/27/99, Chicago Sun- Times 5/26/99, Time 5/3/99, and Reuters on the Internet).

In a program to train mentors assisting candidates in preparing for the specialty board certification, Dr. Bakland, Steven Morrow SD'60, MS'84, associate professor of endodontics, and Robert Frank, DDS, associate professor of endodontics, presented information on various aspects of the examination process. Dr. Frank also served as moderator for an oral research presentation and judge for the graduate student poster presentations, and he is a member of the AAE Research Committee.

A highlight during the annual session was the presentation of the Edgar D. Coolidge Award to John Ingle, DDS, lecturer in endodontics. Dr. Ingle has been associated with the School of Dentistry for the past 15 years and is the editor of the well-known text ENDODONTICS, which contains chapters by several faculty members.

The School of Dentistry is very well represented in the organizational structure of the AAE: Mahmoud Torabinejad, DMD, MSD, PhD, professor and director of the graduate program in endodontics completed a three-year service on the Board of Directors. The new representative from California who will take Dr. Torabinejad's place is James Abbott, SD'74, MS'77, currently practicing in Santa Rosa, California.

Dr. Torabinejad is also serving on the AAE Foundation, which raises money for research support. Having steered the Foundation to reach a goal of over ten million dollars for research; Dr. Torabinejad now serves as the national chair for the Foundation.

Continuing his leadership involvement with the AAE, Dr. Torabinejad was installed as Treasurer and will serve on the AAE Executive Committee.

Dr. Bakland was elected president-elect of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics and also serves as a member of the Honors and Awards Committee of the AAE.
