CDA, CDHA award prizes to student table clinics

Loma Linda University dentistry and dental hygiene students who presented table clinics at the April meetings of the California Dental Association and the California Dental Hygiene Association represented the School with distinction. They were awarded three first place ribbons, one second place, and one third place at the conventions held in Anaheim.

"On behalf of the Center for Dental Research, I would like to congratulate all the student winners at the CDA meeting. The quality of scientific work presented in the past five years and this year is an indication of the success and commitment to research from students and faculty and an indication of the School of Dentistry's commitment to research excellence," says Carlos Muñoz, DDS, PhD, professor of restorative dentistry and director of the Center for Dental Research.

CDA dentistry, tied for first place, were Melissa Wages, SD'00 (sponsor Heidi Christensen, DDS, MS), with A Website--Women's Oral Health; and Royce Nicola, Madelyn Fletcher, and Jerome Lee, all SD'00 (sponsor Clyde Roggenkamp, MA, DDS, MSD), with Antibacterial Effect of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate Mixed With Varying Concentrations of Chlorhexidine.

CDA dental hygiene second place, Amy Nettles, Sonja Oliekan, Beth Ann Platner, all DH'99 (sponsor James Kettering, PhD), with Evaluating the Effectiveness of Four Products on Reducing and/or Eliminating Biofilm of Dental Unit Waterlines.

CDHA first place, Jill Hodson, Lennette Sanchez, and Susan Sanchez, all DH'99 (sponsor James Kettering, PhD), with Comparison of the Autoclavable vs. Non-Autoclavable Ultrasonic Handpiece: A Bacteria-free Environment?

"Our students work very hard on their research projects producing some outstanding studies that are well deserving of all the accolades and awards they receive," says Joni Stephens, MS, EdS, professor of dental hygiene. "We are very proud of their efforts and those of their faculty mentors. Loma Linda University is noted for conducting excellent student research and once again, this has been proven true! I can hardly wait for the ADHA and ADA annual meetings!"
