Dean gives testimony at Faculty Week of Prayer chapel

On April 6, the second day of Faculty Week of Prayer, with the theme My Journey with God, School of Dentistry faculty participated in the University-wide chapel services held in the University Church. Robert Kinzer, SD'58, professor and chair of restorative dentistry, was chorister, and Michael Fillman, SD'74, MS'84, associate professor of orthodontics, was pianist. Fred Kasischke, DMin, assistant dean of admissions, spiritual nurture, and service learning, prayed, and special music was provided by Donald Beglau, SD'62, associate professor of restorative dentistry, trombonist. Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MSD, dean of the School of Dentistry, spoke on "Growth."

Dr. Goodacre talked about his background, including his sixth- or seventh-grade decision to be a dentist and be educated at Loma Linda University. He said he always avoided speaking in public and taking a speech class. When he arrived here, he had to do presentations and speeches. One of his learning devices was to practice speaking in front of a television. He taught a continuing education class for a dental society and thought he did a bad job, but years later, someone thanked him for the instruction he'd provided.

Dr. Goodacre's advice is to commit our lives to God, and be ready to follow where God leads, even if it's into the unknown.

He said, "We are today what we are because our past has been what it was. What we will be in the future depends on what we are now."

The final speaker for chapel that day was Shirani Chand, EdD, professor of educational psychology in the Graduate School.

Notes on chapel taken by Lucinda Unruh, SAHP'99, office aide in Educational Support Services.
