Faculty Dental Office
* Michael Lents, DH'00, has recently started work with the Faculty
Dental Office.
International Dentist Program
* IDP welcomes Mary Lou Clement who has been hired as the new secretary.
Mary Lou previously worked in the office of admissions, and IDP is very
excited to have her on our staff.
* In addition to Lale Khankichi-Zade, who is profiled on page 9,
IDP welcomes a second six-month student, Liqun "Larry" Wu. Dr. Wu is from
China and has been director of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital dental clinic
in Hangzhou, People's Republic of China.
Restorative--Implant Dentistry
* Periklis Proussaefs, PG'00, received a $2,000 grant from the
American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) Research Foundation for his
proposal titled "The effect of sealing the perforated maxillary sinus
membrane with a resorbable collagen membrane."
Dr. Proussaefs has completed the advanced education program in both implant
dentistry and prosthodontics; he is currently completing his Master's
degree in prosthodontics.
Jaime Lozada, PG'87, PG'95, professor and director of the implant
dentistry advanced education program and mentor of the granted project,
along with the graduate students and faculty of the implant dentistry
program congratulate Dr. Proussaefs for the AAID grant award.
Orthodontics
* Dr. Gabriela Garcia, a graduate orthodontic fellowship student
from Honduras, received a scholarship from Hispanic Alumni of Loma Linda.
The 16 recipients were honored at the 4th Annual Hispanic Alumni of Loma
Linda University Scholarship Fundraiser and Dinner held at the Wong Kerlee
International Conference Center on Sunday, October 15, 2000. The graduate
orthodontic department faculty, staff and students are proud of Dr. Garcia's
accomplishment and offer our most sincere congratulations.
* On October 12 and 13, R. David Rynearson, SD'71; MS'87, presented
the topic, "Orthodontics for the 21st Century Dental Practice" at the
Southern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists' biennial Medical/Dental
Congress in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
According to Dr. Rynearson, the Medical/Dental Congress was attended
by physicians and dentists from the Southern states, many of whom are
graduates of Loma Linda University.
The biennial meeting features continuing medical and dental education
in a beautiful fall color setting, along with planned social and worship
activities.
Periodontics and Dental Hygiene
* Carrie Davies, 'DH00 has recently been hired by graduate periodontics
and dental hygiene.
Sterilization
* The sterilization department welcomes a new employee, Melissa Powers,
and William Fifer Jr. is now in the laundry position. Josonjia
Thompkins, supervisor of sterilization, would like to thank the entire
sterilization staff for their hard work and dedication. The department
is working together well to meet the needs of the dental school and to
be the best possible service department. Ms. Thompkins is thankful for
employees Marisela, Patty, Hilda, Lauri, Irene, and Angie.
Certifications
* Congratulations to Linzy Troia, who works in radiology, on receiving
her CDA!
