School of Dentistry hosts Fifth Annual Judson Klooster Symposium

On Sunday, October 1, the fifth annual Judson Klooster Symposium took place in the amphitheater of Prince Hall.

Leif K. Bakland, SD'63, professor and chair of endodontics and associate dean of advanced education, School of Dentistry, served as moderator for the symposium.

Attendees, who were eligible for seven hours of California continuing dental education, listened to lectures from faculty members in the departments of restorative dentistry, dental anesthesiology, endodontics, and periodontics in the School of Dentistry.

In the morning, presentations included þCaries Risk AssessmentÜStatus 2000,ú (Douglass Roberts, SD'66, MS'77, professor and chair, restorative dentistry); þDenture Classification System: New and Improved!ú (Dan B. Hall, DDS, assistant professor of restorative dentistry); þRidge Resorption, Calcium, Protein: What's the Connection?ú (Ronald Blank, SD'75A, associate professor of restorative dentistry); þTooth Bleaching Safety,ú (Yiming Li, DDS, MSD, PhD, professor of restorative dentistry); and þGeneral Anesthesia, Conscious Sedation, Oral Sedation: What's the Difference?ú (Michael Mashni, SD'92, PG'94, associate professor of dental anesthesiology).

Judson Klooster, DDS, dean emeritus and his wife, Arlene, were present for the symposium established and named in his honor.

In the afternoon, lectures included: þVital Pulp Therapy and Apexification: New Treatmentsú (Shahrokh Shabahang, DDS, assistant professor of endodontics); þWhat If I Suspect My Professional Colleague is Abusing Drugs?ú (William Hooker, PhD, associate dean of student affairs); and þMost Common Causes of Dental Malpractice,ú (Roland C. Bainer, Esq., private law practice in Corona, California).

The final two seminars of the day were þPeriodontal Disease: Is It in Your Genes?ú (Dimitris Tatakis, DDS, PhD, professor of periodontics); and þDental JeopardyÜthe Game for All Dental Professionals,ú (Doyle Nick, SD'78, PG'94, associate professor of restorative dentistry).

The annual event was established in 1996 and the speakers present their lectures honorarium free.

Half of the profits from the event are applied to the Judson Klooster Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The Fund, named for Judson Klooster, DDS, dean emeritus of the School of Dentistry and his wife, Arlene, DH'71, was established by an initial grant of $250,000 from the Lindgren Foundation. The Fund is used to provide scholarships to students in the School of Dentistry.
