Annual fall family retreat at Pine Springs Ranch provides a time to rest and recharge

class 2005
Members of the class of 2005 gather for an impromptu number.

The annual fall School Family Retreat was held October 19 to 21 at Pine Springs Ranch. Students, faculty, staff, and their families enjoyed cool mountain air, mostly blue skies, and almost-sweater weather.

Smuts van Rooyen, pastor of the Vallejo Drive Church, presented a two-part talk, “Love and joy for dental students,” during Friday evening vespers and Sabbath Church service the next day.

Following vespers and refreshments in the dining hall Friday evening, Roger Plata, SD’74, recently retired faculty member, shared his knowledge of astronomy with the group.
Sabbath afternoon, musicians from the dental school presented a musical program, and Sue Kim, dental hygiene class of 2002 and Nina Mirzayan, D4, presented reports on their mission work in Africa and Armenia.

Every seat in the Ponderosa Room was full for Saturday evening’s entertainment: “Saturday Night at the Ranch.”

Rhett (D3) and Claudia Ecklund won the grand prize—a trip for two to Hawaii. Here they pose with Dr. Hasenauer and their two daughters.

Bruce Hasenauer, SD’77, assistant professor, served as emcee. Aspiring performers took their turn at the mike for the karaoke contest. Sixty-three prizes worth more than $5,000 were awarded to performers, and to members of the audience in prize drawings. This includes $1,250 donated for the grand prize trip. At least 48 departments and individuals participated in these donations.

Special thanks should go to Heather Lauer, D3, for her work on the music for the programs, and for coordinating the entire prize program with Gretchen Schnepper, D3. Student services coordinated the lodge accommodations under the capable direction of student worker Gina Rovetti. Dr. Hasenauer and his wife, Cheryl, were instrumental in making the Saturday night event successful.

Activities for children (Bible stories and crafts) were arranged by Becky Todd, DH’02, and Brian Olsen, D4. Talented members of the class of 2003 provide special music on Sabbath.
