Faculty attend Conference of Operative Dentistry Educators
by Daniel Tan
On October 4 and 5, Daniel Tan, SD75,
professor, and Patrick Oshita, SD96, assistant professor, restorative
dentistry, had the opportunity to contribute at the annual Pacific Region
CODE (Conference of Operative Dentistry Educators) meeting at the University
of Southern California.
Items on the agenda included topics on the following: how each school
is dealing with their clinical requirements vs. comprehensive care, as
the curriculum should be competency based; how each school is determining
and maintaining competency; do students have their assigned cubicles,
go to a specific clinical discipline area, or rotate through a block assignment;
are there non-patient competency exams; what type of lab support services
does the school utilize; what type of curing light techniques are you
teaching the students; does your school require students to have magnifiers?
There normally are representatives from the eight Pacific Coast schools
of dentistry: UBC, UW, OHS, UOP, UCSF, USC, UCLA, and LLU. This year,
however, because of the recent events, only local schools (USC, UCLA,
LLU) and UBC attended. Next years conference is tentatively scheduled
to be held in San Francisco.
