First annual teacher of the year award to be presented at graduation,
2001
by Doyle Nick
Next spring at graduation, the first annual Teacher of the Year Award
will be presented to the faculty member who best exemplifies the ideal
teacher.
This person will have demonstrated regard for students and dentistry by
personal dedication to students, educational innovation, extensive knowledge,
Christian attitude, and teaching effectiveness. This award will go to
a person who has made a positive difference in the School of Dentistry.
The individual, so chosen, will receive recognition on the Teacher of
the Year Wall, a cash award of $1,000, the use of a convenient, marked
parking place for one year, and a medallion to be worn with academic regalia.
Any teacher in any dental school program who has been half-time or more
for three years is eligible.
Included are those who teach basic or behavioral science courses, pre-clinical
courses, or in the clinic.
The selection process will begin with nomination by popular ballot. Ballots
will be given to D1, D2, D3, D4 students, dental hygiene students, graduate
students, International Dentist Program students, all staff, administrators,
and faculty.
The office of associate dean for academic affairs will tabulate and report
the results of this nomination process to the faculty development committee
before April 15. Before May 1, the faculty development committee will
choose four semi-finalists.
It is an honor to be selected to this short list and letters of congratulations
will be sent to these teachers from the dean for academic affairs.
A committee comprised of the dean, the associate dean of academic affairs,
the president of the DSA, the head of the employees association, the presidents
of the D4 and D3, and senior dental hygiene classes, the chair of the
faculty development committee, the chair of the faculty promotions committee,
and the chair of the faculty council will decide the Teacher of the Year.
They will consider recommendations from department heads, CVs, voluntary
letters from students, faculty and staff, as well as course and clinic
evaluations. This is will be completed before May 15.
This award has been designed to reward and recognize dedication to excellent
teaching and to allow students to provide input concerning the quality
of their own education.
