School of Dentistry holds third annual Celebration
 |

Nearly 700 faculty, students, staff, and guests attended
the School of Dentistry Third Annual Celebration, a time to celebrate
accomplishments, and to learn about plans for future projects. This
year’s theme was “Shaping our future together.”
Dr. Joseph M. Caruso, chair and director, advanced education program
in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, presided over the Celebration.
Following a harp prelude by Haley Gottfried, first-year dental student,
B. Lyn Behrens, MBBS, president and CEO, LLUAHSC, began the event with
prayer.

After a welcome by Dr. Charles J. Goodacre, dean, students,
patients, and faculty shared their experiences and goals for the future.
Dr. William Loveless, professor, dental educational services, interviewed
students including: Shawn Anderson, D3; Dr. Lilia Herrera, in her final
year in the School’s international dentist program; and Anne Golden,
senior dental hygiene student.

Dr. Paul Richardson, associate dean for clinic administration,
presented a Powerpoint presentation highlighting the various entities
within the School and clinics, and the development and growth of the
group practice model now used in dental and dental hygiene education.
Current faculty who helped develop and implement the group practice
model were recognized.
Dr. Ron Forde, director, service learning, interviewed Andrea Carvalho,
D4, about her experiences volunteering in the Share Ourselves clinic
in Costa Mesa.

Dr. Ronald Dailey, associate dean, academic affairs,
gave a brief update on planned changes to the predoctoral curriculum.
During the program Dr. Lloyd Baum, professor emeritus, and Dr. Robert
Kinzer, professor, restorative dentistry, were awarded plaques for their
years of selfless service which continue to influence students, alumni,
and the profession.

“Celebrate!” an inspirational slide show,
and a slideshow highlighting progress of the School’s communication
taskforce by Jennifer Osborne, department assistant, clinic administration,
were also shown.
Following closing comments by Dr. Caruso, the Celebration moved to the
area surrounding the Good Samaritan statue for lunch and the door prize
drawings.
Sixty people won door prizes ranging from $20 to $300.
