Alumna wins essay contest, honors professor
by Christy K. Robinson

Polly Sprague, SD'96, MA'98 (biomedical ethics), is the winner of the Seventh Annual Dr. Edward T. Ryan Essay Contest, sponsored by the Massachusetts Dental Society's History and Library Information Services Committee. In addition to having her article published in the Journal of the Massachusetts Dental Society (Vol. 48, No. 3, Fall 1999), Dr. Sprague was awarded $300 and a plaque for her essay.

Dr. Sprague practices dentistry in South Lancaster, Massachusetts.

Her essay is titled "Moral Exemplars: The Concept and the Consciousness." Its introduction says, "In an environment of increasing pressure to produce instead of practice dentistry, it is important to be aware of and embrace dentistry's legacy of ethical professionalism. As one step toward that goal, this paper helps to clarify the concept of the moral exemplar, argues for its importance in shaping the profession's consciousness, and links a face with the phrase."

Dr. Wical

The face Dr. Sprague wrote about belongs to Kenneth Wical, DDS, professor of restorative dentistry at Loma Linda University.

"The primary reason that I have chosen to identify Dr. Wical as a moral exemplar is his willingness to set aside his own interests and to do what needs to be done," writes Dr. Sprague.

"His unfailing kindness to students and patients in the lab and on clinic is a continual motivation to learn and an inspiration to treat colleagues and patients with the utmost respect and understanding. His gentle authority, humility, and exceptional ability to teach have earned him the devotion and respect of students and faculty alike," she wrote.

In her conclusion, Dr. Sprague wrote, "People like Dr. Wical do not decide to be moral exemplars. In fact, the designation would surprise and embarrass them. But such people do choose to be honest, caring, and principled."

She then called for dental professionals to incorporate the moral exemplars into their professional experiences, and to "reflect the light of principled compassion and professionalism into the dark places of human experience that surround us."

Don't say you're scared of needles!

Another satisfied customer: Cindy Adell of urgent care/patient screening receives her annual flu shot from an Employee Health nurse, Debbie Lusk, RN. The flu shots are free to School of Dentistry employees, and available on October 27, November 16, and November 18, in the oral surgery sterilization area. Doctors say you will NOT get the flu from taking the painless shot, but the shot could save you two weeks of misery if you chicken out, skip the shot and come down with the flu!
