It is believed to be the largest group of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry alumni and faculty inducted at one time into the College. Fellowship is awarded to individuals nominated to the College for their demonstrated leadership and accomplishments in the profession of dentistry. The mission of the College is to promote high standards and ethics in the profession.

As part of the meeting in Honolulu, workshops were held on leadership in terms of ethics, including network ethics. Participating as a panel member was Gerald R. Winslow, PhD, dean, Faculty of Religion. Dr. Winslow has participated extensively both on the state level and nationally on programs related to dental ethics and he is on the test committee that develops the ethics questions for the California Board of Dental Examiners.

Heartfelt congratulations to the new Fellows of the American College of Dentistry -- you will recognize them at the next graduation event by the bright crimson borders on their academic gowns!

Administration
California dental schools hosted the 1999 session of AFASA, a subgroup of the American Association of Dental Schools which consists of student affairs, admissions and financial aid officers from all dental schools in North America. The conference, held in Monterey from October 29 to November 1, was based on the theme "Wellness: Body, Mind and Spirit."

William Hooker, PhD, MFCC, associate dean for student affairs, presented a 90-minute seminar on "Recovery and Spirituality," with Curtis E. Vixie, SD'89, a recovering alumnus, assisting in the session. Dr. Hooker reported on his review of the outcome of 15 years of the "Impaired Student" recovery program, which included both medical and dental students in similar substance abuse recovery programs.

"I felt quite flattered that they wanted me to help organize this session," says Dr. Hooker. "We had Pat Sammon from University of Kentucky and Bob Krasny from UCLA also presenting in this session."

Ron Dailey, PhD, associate dean for academic affairs, attended the 1999 Syllabus Convention in Santa Clara in late July. It covered the latest in educational technology.

The annual Christmas Breakfast has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 8 from 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. It will be held in the Staff/Student Lounge and there will be live entertainment in Rooms 1101/1102. Faculty, staff and students are all welcome. We still need volunteers for serving, clean up, raffle items, entertainment and more!

Fred Kasischke, DMin, assistant dean for service learning and admissions, was co-presenter of a workshop called "Tapping Spiritual Resources," September 28 in Sacramento. It was part of the Sixth Annual Family-Centered Services Conference, sponsored by the California Department of Social Services, Office of Child Abuse Prevention.

Dean Goodacre has asked her to develop a strategic plan for IT. According to Ms. Foster, the plan is envisioned to be a document that will articulate the information technology issues and needs of all segments of the schoolís user community, establishing institutional priorities, and recommending implementation strategies.

All segments of the School, including academic, clinical, and administration have recognized that technology changes rapidly, therefore it is important to define a strategic direction rather than prescribing quick fixes.

Secondary to the IT planning process, Carrie will be helping to develop an integrated SD web site. Faculty or departments who would like information placed on the web site can contact Carrie at x48006.

Join us in welcoming Carrie to our community.
