Dentists meet in Hawaii for ADA, NASDAD
Alumni gather in Honolulu
by Barbara Bostwick
More than 90 alumni, family and friends gathered at the
Dean's Reception during the 1999 American Dental Association Session in
Honolulu in October. Class members from 1958 through 1999 enjoyed meeting
with friends and colleagues at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, at the annual
Dean's Reception hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Charles J. Goodacre.
Other than those coming from Hawaii and California, the largest contingent
traveled from Texas, with several from Oregon and Arizona. Other states
represented were Colorado, North Carolina, Washington, Illinois and North
Dakota.

NASDAD holds national conventionby William Heisler, SD'59, professor of restorative dentistry
Led by President William Heisler, SD'59, the National Association

The NASDAD convention was held at the Outrigger Wailea Beach
Resort Hotel on the beautiful southwest coast of Maui. Seventy-nine members
registered, and approximately 150 members, families and friends joined in
the planned activities.
Thursday morning found approximately 36 golfers enjoying the annual golf
tournament, coordinated by Richard Young, SD'85, on the lush Wailea
Emerald course.
Jaime Lozada, DDS, PG'87, PG'95, director of the LLUSD Center for
Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry, presented the continuing education
program on implant dentistry.
Dr. Bill Loveless, senior pastor of the LLU Seventh-day Adventist
Church, and his wife, Dr. Edna Mae Loveless, chair of the La Sierra
University English department, led out in lively interactive spiritual emphasis
meetings on Friday evening and on Sabbath morning and afternoon.
Especially active in the planning for this year's convention was Judson
Klooster, DDS, dean emeritus, NASDAD's executive director. He was ably
assisted by Florence Wetmore and Sharon Stirewalt, DH'93,
who serve as NASDAD office assistants, both of whom were on hand for registration
and to make sure all activities were coordinated. Dr. and Mrs. Klooster
were unable to attend due to Mrs. Klooster's illness shortly before the
convention. They were sorely missed by their many NASDAD friends, who honored
them by sending a large bouquet of tropical flowers.
The highlight of every NASDAD convention is the Dental Missions Activity
Report given by James Crawford, SD'60, MPH, executive associate dean
and Dental Associate Secretary of the General Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists. He reported that $31,000 was dispersed in support of mission
clinics and the School of Dentistry Overseas Clerkship program. Ten thousand
dollars was received from the YAMM (Year Around Mission Money) fund. Peter
Nelson, SD'70, chair of the mission committee, presented the mission
committee's requests for the coming year, which totaled $35,200, including
an additional installment of $10,000 for the School of Dentistry clerkship
program. Following his report, Dr. Nelson called for the YAMM mission offering,
which totaled $24,000.
At the annual banquet and business meeting on Saturday evening the group
was entertained during dinner with traditional Hawaiian music and hula dancing.
In the final act of the evening, Dr. Heisler turned the gavel over to incoming
president Dennis Starkey, SD'83, MS, who will lead NASDAD during
the coming year and preside over the year 2000 convention at Indian Lakes
Resort in suburban Chicago, the site of next year's ADA convention.
