Incoming students complete orientation   On Wednesday, September 20, incoming dentistry and dental hygiene students entered the amphitheater in Prince Hall for their first day of orientation.   Charles Goodacre, DDS, MSD, dean, welcomes new students during orientation.   After a welcome from Charles Goodacre, DDS, MSD, dean, the new students listened to presentations from Chris Blount, SD'02 (Dental Student Association); and Gerald Winslow, PhD, dean, Faculty of Religion. In his presentation, Dr. Winslow outlined the history and beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and gave a historical sketch of the beginnings of Loma Linda University. Each presentation during the remainder of the three-day orientation was designed to acquaint the students with the institution and to make them aware of the services and programs available to them. William Hooker, PhD, MFCC, associate dean for student affairs, emphasized that it is important to tutor others in areas that they understand but may be challenging for a classmate. In addition, the students learned a number of things, from what to do if they must miss a class, to disability insurance, to student health and counseling service available. They also learned about their learning style from author and educational psychologist Keith Golay, PhD. J. C. Belliard, MPH, program director, Students for International Mission Service (SIMS), informed the students about opportunities for service, including participation in international trips to provide health care, and Community Kids Connection, an outreach to local underprivileged children. The students also heard presentations from Ralph Perrin, dean for student affairs, and LLU student association officers, including a calendar of upcoming social events where they can meet students from the other five schools in the University. Other presenters included William Heisler, DDS, faculty, international dentist program; Fred Kasischke, DMin, assistant dean for admissions and service learning; Sylvia Davis, MA, director of admissions; Karen Simpson, MPH, RDH, chair, dental hygiene; Rhonda Hamerslough, MA, RDH, instructor, dental hygiene; and Leslie Pollard, DMin, director of diversity.
