Brett Clifton, SD86, assistant professor, dental educational
services, has accepted a position as director, Marillac Dental Clinic
in Grand Junction, Colorado.
When Dr. Clifton graduated from the School of Dentistry he continued to
explore the many facets of the profession. He completed a general practice
residency at Jerry L. Pettis Veterans Administration Hospital in
Loma Linda, worked in private practice, and part-time in restorative and
oral surgery.
He then practiced for two-and-a-half years in Alaska before returning
to Southern California where he served in administration, dental benefit
program, for Riverside Countys medical indigent program. The County
contracts with Riverside County Regional Medical Center along with several
providers, to make dental care available to some of the regions
most underserved populations.
Dr. Clifton also joined the Schools dental educational services
department, sharing his skill with D3 and D4 students in clinical education.
Some of the highlights of his work at the School included teaching with
the California State Dental Board Examination preparation course and serving
as faculty sponsor for student missions. He hopes to find a way to become
involved with the Schools outreach and mission programs, perhaps
supervising dental and dental hygiene students during one of the many
mission trips that take place each year.
According to Dr. Clifton, Merillac Dental Clinic serves an uninsured population,
with a tremendous need. Three staff dentists and six volunteer dentists
staff the clinic. The University of Colorado sends between 4 and 8 students
to the clinic as part of their training, and dental hygiene students come
to the clinic from a school in Rangeley. The clinic is privately owned,
with much of the funding supplied through contracts and grants. Approximately
half of the patients are pediatric. Dr. Clifton looks forward to a new,
$1.9 million facility with 12 operatories that is now in the planning
stages. Groundbreaking is scheduled to take place in March, 2002.
Our students [at Loma Linda] benefit from the knowledge of many
talented faculty who contribute wholeheartedly to the School, emphasizes
Dr. Bruce Walter, director, clinical group practices. Dr. Clifton
is one of these individuals, and it is important that his contribution
be recognized. We wish Dr. Clifton the best as he assumes his new responsibilities.
