Continuing dental education

  • Eddie Glassford has been hired as assistant director, continuing dental education. He will manage and promote continuing education programs for the School of Dentistry. Please give Mr. Glassford a warm welcome to the School family.

Prosthodontics

  • The advanced education program in prosthodontics has undergone a change in leadership: Dr. Guillermo Bernal has taken over as program director while Dr. Wayne Campagni will continue to serve the program as associate director. The prosthodontic program has relocated to new office spaces: rooms 1165 and 1166 on the first floor.
  • The department welcomes new graduate prosthodontics residents: Dr. Amir H. Katami and Dr. Saeda Basta.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery

  • Three residents had papers accepted at the annual session of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in Orlando. This includes Dr. Brett King (PGY2), with his project titled “A Quantitative Anatomical Study of Proximal Tibial Bone Harvest and Description of a Technique”; Dr. Todd Cooper (PGY3), with his project “An Analysis of Panfacial Fractures”; and Dr. Robert Mower (PGY4), with his project “Use of Acellular Dermal Matrix for Reconstruction of Facial Defects.” Loma Linda had the distinction of having the most papers accepted from a single department in the country. In addition to the resident papers, Dr. Alan Herford, assistant professor/assistant program director, gave a presentation titled “Maintaining Vector Control During Alveolar Distraction Osteogenesis.” Two of Dr. Herford’s articles have recently been published: “Reconstruction of Superficial Skin Cancer Defects of the Nose,” Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, 59:760-767, 2001, and “Multifocal Desmoplastic Fibromas of the Mandible” Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, 59:1078-1081.
  • Dr. Philip Boyne and Dr. Herford recently wrote a book chapter titled “An Algorithm for Reconstruction of Alveolar Defects” published in Clinics of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Dr. Boyne is co-author of a textbook, Advanced Osseointegration, published in Italian, RC edition, Milan.
