HIPAA

Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act—
Guarding protected health information

HIPAA regulations requires patient health information be relayed to the patient ONLY unless there is written authorization to give that information to another person. As patients become aware of the privacy regulations within HIPAA, we need to remember to strictly adhere to these requirements.

The only exception to this rule: When the patient is a minor, information can be given to the parent or the legal guardian.
