Welcome
It is a special pleasure to welcome our new dental hygiene and dental
students to the School of Dentistry. You are joining our new graduate
students who started their programs in July.
A mixture of excitement and apprehension fills the air as your educational
dreams are being realized. We have great expectations of you and you
are expecting great things from us. History has shown that neither
of us will completely meet each other's expectations, but as we join
together toward the common goal of an outstanding education, the results
will be incredible.
May every success be yours as you embark upon a profession that has
been so stimulating and rewarding to me.

colleges and universities represented, including two in Canada.
The average age in the class is 24, with students born from 1963 through
1979. Eighty-six percent of the class is single, with eight members who
are parents. Ethnic cultures represented include class members from 12
countries. Eight of the class members were born at Loma Linda University
Medical Center. There are 16 other U.S. states from which the students
come. The most common surnames of the class are Kim and Lee, with the
most popular first name being Timothy. There are two brother and sister
teams, and one set of twins. Twenty-eight members of the class are reapplicants,
with six students who were part of the biomedical certificate program,
set up by the Graduate School of LLU.
The honors and awards earned by the Class of 2003 include one student
who completed a four-year scholarship at UCLA, a student who won the Azusa
Pacific University President's scholarship, one who has won three national
championships showing Arabian horses, one student who has won national
medals in swimming, and one who has won sailing regattas in San Diego.
Many students have participated in mission or community projects through
their schools and churches, and come to LLUSD with high recommendations
for being compassionate and caring individuals.
There are numerous musicians in the class and several who are very creative
and have won impressive prizes in art events. Others have been leaders
on their campuses in student government and have organized a variety of
events that include the pre-dental clubs on campus.

orientation. |
Dental hygiene students come to LLUSD from 29 universities and colleges
with an average GPA of 3.32. There are five students from La Sierra University
and Riverside Community College, and six from Pacific Union College. Three
are entering, having already completed a baccalaureate degree in Japanese,
health and fitness, and elementary education. Sixteen of the new class
members are reapplicants. There are two students who are entering, having
completed all of their science coursework with only grades of A. One chemistry
professor who recommended his student (now ours), commented that she did
not miss one point over the entire semester.
There are 41 women in the class, and one man. Two students were celebrating
birthdays on the first day of orientation and received birthday cakes
from their new friends. The average age is 22 years old, with members
in the class born from 1958 to 1979. Of the 42 students, 12 are married
and 11 are mothers. They were born in nine different countries, and nine
of them are international students. Of those born in the United States,
22 were born in California, with nine other states represented.
Fifteen of the students are already dental assistants, with several others
who have worked in health care in other areas. One student worked with
dentists in refugee camps in Indonesia, while another worked as a dental
hygienist in Korea, where requirements are different than in the United
States. One student is here this year after deferring her acceptance for
a year to work as a student missionary. There are musicians in the class,
including one who has been a member of the La Sierra University Octet,
and one who was selected as a drummer for the All-Honors High School Band
to march in the Rose Parade.
There is a variety of names in the class, with two Tracys, but no two
with the same last name. As a class, they come highly recommended as caring
and compassionate, with significant contributions to be made to the profession
of dental hygiene.
Five dental hygiene students are daughters of LLU School of Dentistry
graduates. They are: Allison Campbell (Stephen Campbell, SD'73, MS'75);
Kari Fillmore (Gerald Fillmore, SD'71, MS'73, and Brit Loka Fillmore,
DH'70); Alisa Moore (William Moore, SD'75B); Alexandra Upp (Donald Lunt,
SD'68); Kristel Zendner (Dan Zendner, SD'76).
Three students have siblings already in the School of Dentistry: Julie
Lim, sister of Jennifer Lim, SD'03; Joy Villanueva, sister of Nancy Villanueva,
SD'01; and Katie Vongschanphen, sister of Jon Vongschanphen, SD'01. Sheila
Nerenberg is the sister of Mike Fitzpatrick, SD'87.
Paula Speer, who has joined the class as a mother of two children, was
distinguished by the letter her daughter Jillian, age 12, wrote on her
behalf: "I am recommending my mother to your school because I've
watched her work really hard to get where she is right now. She's stayed
up studying long hard hours, all through the night. I can go on and on,
but I won't waste your time! My brother and I would really appreciate
it if Mommy was able to get into your wonderful school." This, along
with several other letters on Paula's behalf, gained her a place in our
class.
She is one of 42 outstanding individuals who have begun their process
to become dental hygienists, and will bring honor to the School of Dentistry
as alumni.
