ASDA names Region X Delegate
of the Year--from LLU
Shelton Hsu, SD'00, was named Delegate of the Year for Region X,
the west coast states, by the American Student Dental Association (ASDA),
when the association met in Denver, September 1 - 5. He was presented
with an engraved plaque and many congratulations.
ASDA has 55 member dental schools, and 250 student representatives from
around North America. Representatives are elected by their peers during
their sophomore year of dental school and serve for three years.
Mr. Hsu is co-president of the Loma Linda University Dental Student Association,
and first delegate to the ASDA. Joined by Ryan Thomas, SD'01, also an
ASDA delegate, he helps form policy and take actions for the ASDA, which
represents the needs and concerns of dental students nationally.
Recent Capitol Hill lobbying by ASDA involved issues of dental licensure,
student debt, and coaxing the government to allow tax deductions for student
loan interest.

DSA plans activities
Ken Pierson, Dental Student Association co-president and senior dental
student, says that the 1999 - 2000 DSA activities menu will include faculty
home vespers, beach vespers, softball games, root beer float feeds, nights
at the local amusement park and the Drayson Activities Center, another
barbecue, and many other social activities. The DSA officers and members
are also planning the annual Clinic With a Heart, a free dental clinic
held each spring.
Student gets kudo
The Bulletin of Dental Education, the publication of American Association
of Dental Schools, mentioned Melissa Wages, SD'00, in its May 1999 issue,
in its Kudos section, for having developed her women's oral health website.
The section said, "Ms. Melissa Redd-Wages, a junior dental student
at Loma Linda University, recently was awarded first place for her educational
project at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Alumni Convention.
Ms. Redd-Wages developed a website that addresses women's oral health
issues. The website is located at <www.womensoralhealth.org>."
Ms. Wages is in good company. The rest of the column congratulates medallion
winners, distinguished leaders, and professors for their accomplishments.
