Dental Hygiene
* Dentsply has programs for dental and hygiene programs which allow them to give us donations in the form of products. On June 30, the end of the fiscal year, Dental Hygiene had received products such as pit and fissure sealants, a prophy jet, and cavitron inserts worth $3,623.27.

Dental Insurance
Two School of Dentistry dental insurance specialists were present when the Loma Linda Bank of America was robbed on September 30. Delores Galindo and Soledad Garcia were (lawfully) extracting lunch money from the ATM on the east side of the bank building, when a robber burst from the front doors with a paper grocery sack full of money. The robber screamed, "Let me go!" as he was tackled by bank security guards, and turned over to San Bernardino County Sheriff deputies.

"I felt like running without stopping. I'm not going there again!" vows Ms. Garcia.

Endodontics
Persepolis
Leif K. Bakland, SD'63, professor and chair of endodontics, recently returned from a lecture tour of Kuwait and Iran. He first spoke to the Kuwait Dental Association on the topic of "Management of Endodontic Mishaps." After that, he traveled with his wife, Grete, to the old Persian city of Shiraz, where he gave two lectures on dental trauma and endodontics to the Third International Congress of the Iranian Endodontic Association, a meeting that drew about 1,000 participating dentists.

A highlight of Dr. Bakland's trip to Iran was the opportunity to visit the ancient (ca. 500 BC) city of Persepolis, which is older than the Acropolis in Athens. Persepolis was destroyed by Alexander, who we in the West refer to as "Alexander the Great," but whom the Persians call "Alexander the Devil" for obvious reasons. Shown is the Gate of Xerxes at Persepolis, which is Greek for "City of the Persians."

* The Department of Endodontics presented the 16th Annual Review of Endodontic Biology on September 26 - 27. This two-day course is primarily for endodontists preparing for certification by the American Board of Endodontics and is the longest continuously running course of its kind. About 100 endodontists and other dentists from all over the country attended.

* Returning to the Department for a second sabbatical is visiting scholar, Dr. Chan-Vi Hong, from Dankook University in Korea. His first sabbatical here was in 1992 - 93, and Dr. Hong will now spend the next 12 months conducting research in endodontics with Dr. Mahmoud Torabinejad, professor and director of the advanced education program in endodontics.

Joining Dr. Hong in his one-year stay in Loma Linda will be his wife, Byung-Hyun, and their daughter Ji-Yeon and son Seok-Jin. We welcome the Hongs back to Loma Linda and wish them all the best during their stay here.

Dr. Lin teaches in the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic, as well as in the dental/oral clinics at Riverside County Regional MC and Arrowhead Regional MC.
