Administration

Hooker

William Hooker, PhD, MFCC, associate dean for student affairs, traveled to Sacramento recently as a new member of the State’s Diversion Evaluation Committee for the California Dental Board. In August Dr. Hooker was appointed for a four-year term as the public member of the Diversion Evaluation Committee’s maintenance program. The committee is charged with following dentists and dental health-care workers with need for monitoring for alcoholism and other chemical dependencies. “It was an invigorating experience,” says Dr. Hooker, “ and reinforced to me the value of licensure boards providing a way to help protect the licenses of health-care workers while they get the help they need and at the same time protecting the public. I consider this appointment a real honor, and it is already a big help to my understanding the challenges encountered by an agency whose responsibility is to ensure that quality dentistry is provided to the public.”

Dental educational services

  • Jay S. Kim, PhD, was an invited speaker at the statistics colloquium sponsored by the department of statistics, University of California—Riverside on August 14. The topic of his talk was “Piecewise Exponential Estimator of the Survival Function.” Dr. Kim discussed an alternative method of estimating the survivor function of a life distribution from censored data. The method was illustrated, and he explained how to calculate the survivor function from censored data. The estimator was compared with the well-known Kaplan-Meier estimator, using a set of data observed in a real world situation. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods were also discussed.
