Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act–
Gaurding protected health information

It is the responsibility of the School of Dentistry (and every student, staff, and faculty member), to guard Protected Health Information (PHI).

This not only means keeping patient information away from public view or access, but also guarding it from both internal and external misuse.

Ask yourself:

• Do you need to see what you are viewing in order to do your job or treat the patient? If not you should not be viewing the information.

• Have you taken reasonable effort to keep the information on your computer screen private? If not, you need to look into getting a privacy screen for your monitor, or move your monitor.

• Do you sign off after each computer session? If not, you need to make session sign-offs a habit.
