Welcome
Greetings to new employee Kristy Williams, coordinator,
orthodontic clinic. Ms. Williams is the wife of first-year dental student,
Wade Williams.
Oral & maxillofacial surgery
•Oral-maxillofacial surgery alumni took the boards for American
Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in March, 2003. Congratulations
to: Hooman Zarrinkelk, SD'94, PG'00, and Franco
Audia, SD'97, MS'01, PG'01. Robert Mower, SD'98,
passed Part I, written.
•Oral and maxillofacial surgery alumnus Michael A. Devlin,
SD'91, MS'98, PG'96, was a guest on CBS “Arkansas
Today,” discussing endoscopic brow lifts, and was also interviewed
for a Little Rock, Arkansas, Monthly, article about new trends
in cosmetic surgery.
•Alan Herford, SD'94, MD, assistant professor
and chair, oral and maxillofacial surgery, was approved for membership
as a Fellow by the Board of Trustees, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery,
June, 2003. He made the following scientific presentations:
1. Surgical lecture: Methods of Reconstructing Alveolar Ridges
Prior to Implant Placement, AAOMS 85th Annual Meeting and Scientific
Sessions, Orlando, Florida.
2. Abstract: Measurement of Forces Exerted on the Condoles During
Distraction Osteogenesis in the Mini-Pigs, AAOMS 85th Annual
Meeting and Scientific Sessions, Orlando, Florida, September 10 to
13, 2003.
3. Overview of Distraction Osteogenesis of the Facial Skeleton,
Sharpe Memorial Hospital, San Diego, August 18, 2003.
4. Maxillofacial Trauma and Distraction of the Face, Synthes
Maxillofacial Southwest Regional Meeting, Las Vegas, Nevada, July
8-9, 2003.
•Phillip Boyne, DMD, DSc, emeritus professor,
oral and maxillofacial surgery, presented the following scientific abstracts
in Orlando Florida, September 10 to 13, 2003, at the AAOMS 85th Annual
Meeting and Scientific Sessions: Effects of Long-Term Function on
BMP Complemented D.O. Osteogenesis of the Edentulous Mandible in the
Papio Anubis Baboon; and Distraction Osteogenesis of the Nasal and Antral
Osseous Floor Moving Small Alveolar Bone Segments.
•Dr. Brett King, fourth-year resident in oral
and maxillofacial surgery, presented a poster at the AAOMS 85th Annual
Meeting and Scientific Sessions in Orlando Florida on September 10-13,
2003: “Comparison of Intercanthal, Interpupillary and Alar
Base Distance in Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic and Asian Populations”
Oral diagnosis radiology & pathology

•Dr. Lane Thomsen, chair and associate professor,
oral diagnosis, radiology and pathology, was a guest speaker on a Holland-American
Alaska Cruise. The excursion was organized by LLUSD Continuing Education
department and University Travel.
Other speakers included Dr. Randy Roberts, pastor of the University
Church of Seventh-day Adventists, and Dr. Richard Hart, chancellor.
The group included 130 individuals with 32 dentist attending the dental
continuing education program entitled “Recognition and Treatment
of Oral Disease.”
Stops were made in Glacier National Park, Sitka, Juneau, and Ketchikan.
•Dr. James Gulley from the National Cancer Institute,
spoke to the senior dental class on July 11 on vaccination therapy for
cancer. Dr. Gulley lives in Washington, D.C., and is a faculty member
in the oral diagnosis, radiology & pathology department.
