The Times carries news and features, plus advertisements for businesses such as appliance dealers, optometrists, physicians, printers, motels, and county fair events. One quarter-page display ad features Elko Dental Associates, listing partners Drs. Jeffrey Bartley and Nathan Lewis. A feature article in the 24-page tabloid describes Dr. Lewis' plans to participate in the dental mission trip to Magadan, Russia, in September, sponsored by the San Bernardino Crossroads Rotary Club. Those participating in the trip plan to "get the kids squared away with their dental problems," says Dr. Lewis, "and teach a preventive program that the local dentists can continue with once we're gone. It's sad to think that most of these kids have lost their permanent molars by the time they reach 10." Coordinating the trip is William Heisler, SD'59, professor of restorative dentistry, joined by J. Milford Anholm, DDS, MS'62, professor of orthodontics, Joseph Herzog, DDS, and others. Elko Dental Associates is collecting warm clothing to distribute to Russian patients. Debra Tobin, editor of the Nevada Times, has been an editor in Ohio and California and has been involved in publishing for over 20 years, and Dr. Bartley has always been a community leader. He owns several businesses in Eureka, Nevada, but although the newspaper is published from his dental office space in Elko, the Nevada Times is a separate entity. In April, Ms. Tobin started working on figures for the equipment cost, editorial format, and distribution areas to be covered. They published the first issue in June. "Dr. Bartley is the owner of the paper, and he hired me to be the managing editor. I decide what goes in as far as advertising and editorials. If I have a problem, I go to him. He wanted to do this for a long time, but didn't have the knowledge to do it. I had the knowledge, but not the money." With the startup costs, when does the Times expect to realize a profit? "Soon!" says Ms. Tobin with a laugh. "Dr. Bartley bought two computers, a light table, waxer, digital camera -- he invested in that heavily. Now it's just the monthly cost of printing and wages. We hired a gentleman to do advertising, and we've picked up some hotels, casinos, and advertising agencies." Ms. Tobin says, "I think if Dr. Bartley could do the newspaper all the time, he would. He loves it. He'll write a column about Eureka, or an interesting person. He likes to try to bridge the gap between all the little communities. He even enjoys distributing the paper to some of the small towns, like a boy on a paper route." Future issues will carry more pages of news, photos and advertising, as the Nevada Times grows.
