CDA Journal features LLU

There they were in four-color process: the first-place winners of the
student table clinic competition at the California Dental Association
meeting, which met last April in Anaheim. And all the first-place winners
were from our School of Dentistry!
The table clinic winners' pictures were prominently featured -- in color
-- along with their abstracts, in the CDA Journal, Volumne 27,
Number 8, August, 1999. Congratulations!
DH2000 celebrates Sabbath in San Diego
by Brandy Vander Dussen, DH'00
On August 14, the senior dental hygiene class was on the move again. A
Sabbath barbecue held on a sunny San Diego beach brought spouses, children,
parents, and friends to join the activities.
"I enjoyed watching Shelly learn how to boogie on her new boogie
board," Julie Jakovac said.
At noon, everyone gathered on blankets to participate in an inspiring
devotional talk by Ben Bowen, a theology major from Walla Walla College,
and his brother Joe, who shared the gospel.
"He helped us to see that we are here for a greater purpose and dentistry
is our way of reaching out and achieving that," stated Elizabeth
Brutus.
Jackie Tatum agreed. She summed up the day saying, "It was a great
afternoon. We enjoyed the beautiful San Diego weather and spending time
together with friends and family."
Careers in Dentistry
Should I or shouldn't I?
by Fred Kasischke, DMin
Should I become a dental hygienist? Is dentistry really the
profession I want? What would the academic process be like? Do I have
the manual skills to consider such a life-work? Those questions and more
prompted 51 young adults to register for the Careers in Dentistry seminar
this year, held July 25 - 27 at Loma Linda University.

Sunday evening, July 25, the group registered and enjoyed a light dinner
together at the Drayson Center. A tour of the dental school and brief orientation
on the nature of the professions, the history of LLU, and our spiritual
emphasis completed the first phase of the careers seminar.
The next two days were packed full from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Lectures
were given in the basic sciences and introductions to each department within
the School were shared. There was time for manual skills work in the laboratory
and exposure to the charting procedures. The group worshiped together, learned
about the admissions process and about the financial implications of pursuing
a degree at LLUSD. The broad spectrum of the service learning program was
explained as a cornerstone of the School, and personalized by a student
who had just returned from a mission trip.
Ample opportunities were provided for each registrant to interact with a
current student, asking questions, observing and learning first-hand the
challenges and rewards of education at LLUSD.
Sandy Webb, assistant director of admissions, coordinated the seminar with
Duane Wacker, SD'64, assistant professor of restorative dentistry, serving
as the dental host throughout the two days.
When all gathered for the concluding dinner on Tuesday evening, comments
from participants included, "This confirms my decision, and I want
to be here," and "There is a feeling of family here, I can already
sense that."
The admissions department believes Careers in Dentistry to be a very valuable
recruitment tool. Approximately one-third of those who participate in our
workshop are accepted into one of our programs.
Gratitude goes to each department and to each student who contributed, impacting
the life-changing decisions being made by young dental-professionals-to-be.
