Alumni Student Convention
A time to reunite with classmates...

Dr. Goodacre and his wife, Ruthy (left), greet guests in Prince Hall during the 2000 Alumni Student Convention. More than 250 people toured clinics, viewing new and upgraded areas.

The Alumni Student Convention, 2002, will soon arrive—a time to reunite with classmates, attend continuing education courses, relax, and enjoy the many events for alumni, spouses, students, and friends of the School that have been planned.

The Alumni Student Convention will be held February 7 to 11. The opening event is the Golf Tournament at Redlands Country Club, Thursday, February 7.

The same morning, attendees may learn about current research during Scientific Sessions

In the waiting area of Prince Hall, William Hooker, PhD, MFCC, associate dean, student affairs, speaks to those gathered for a tour of the school of Dentistry.

(formerly known as Mini Clinics). Student Table Clinic Presentations will take place at 9:00 a.m. in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center. Participants viewing all presentations will be awarded 2 California continuing dental education credits (completion of the Table Clinic Questionnaire is required).

The School of Dentistry is sponsoring “Full TEAM Ahead,” from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event features Sam Horn, president of Life Balance, Inc. Ms. Horn’s clients include Hewlett-Packard, Fortune 500 Forum, Four Seasons Resorts, and others.

The Homecoming Reception (in place of the Homecoming Banquet), will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Wong Kerlee International Conference Center. Dress is casual for this event, and alumni and their spouses will have the opportunity to greet and visit with classmates and friends. The incoming officers and Board members will be introduced, as well.

Friday, February 8

The Golf Tournament was held at Redlands Country Club on Thursday, February 7.

On Friday, the Annual Missionary Dentists & Prayer Breakfast will be held in Fellowship Hall, followed by Scientific Sessions.

Paul Eleazor, DDS, MS, professor and chair, department of endodontics and pulp biology, University of Alabama, Birmingham, will present “Endodontic Potpourri,” a course for the general dentist, at 8:00 a.m.

A course for dental hygienists and dental assistants, Changing Concepts of Ultrasonics and Air Polishing—Fact Vs. Fiction, presented by Cynthia Fong, RDH, academic coordinator, DENTSPLY International, begins at 8:00 a.m.

Two luncheons are scheduled on Friday: the OKU honor society luncheon, and the Dental Hygienists & Assistants Luncheon, Redlands Country Club.

At 2:00 p.m., the Family Day Reception and Tour will be held. According to Kathleen Moore, MHIS, director, Alumni Association, the comprehensive tours of the School provide valuable insight into the organization. Participants, including parents of first- year students have commented that the tours have helped them better understand the complexity of the School and its clinics, and how they function together.

Dr. Goodacre (left) presents Brian Hanratty, SD'01, with a lab coat with his name on it during the Alumni Student Convention, 2000, Student Dedication.

Randall L. Roberts, DMin, MFT, senior pastor of the University Church, will be keynote speaker for the Student Dedication Program, beginning at 4:00 in the University Church of Seventh-day Adventists.

The Alumni Association sponsors this event, during which each entering student is presented a personalized, leather-bound Bible. The dental and dental hygiene classes of 2002 are also dedicated in a ceremony, and will receive a personalized laboratory coat embroidered with School of Dentistry insignia. “Students have commented that the Bibles, imprinted with their name and professional title, have brought peace and direction to their lives during the challenging times in school and beyond,” says Ms. Moore.

Saturday and Sunday, February 9 and 10
Early Church at Worship begins at 8:30 a.m. in the University Church of Seventh-day Adventists, followed by Church at Study, 10:00 a.m. A second Church at Worship service will be held at 11:15 a.m.

The Sabbath Luncheon will be held at 12:30 in the Campus Cafeteria ($13 per adult and $5 per child under 12 years old).

The University Church Sanctuary Brass will present a vespers service at 4:00 p.m. in the University Church. School of Dentistry alumni will be featured during this event.

The Alumni Student Convention concludes Sunday, with courses in Esthetic Dentistry (8:30 a.m.); and the Anesthesia Symposium.

During the Hygienists & Assistants luncheon, Joni Stephens, MS, EdS, (left) presents Karen Simpson, MPH, chair, dental hygiene, with the Dental Hygiene Alumnus of the Year Award, 2000. During the 2000 Alumni Student Convention Homecoming Banquet Judson Klooster, DDS, dean emeritus (left) and his wife, Arlene Klooster, receive the Alumni of the Year Award from Tom Rogers, SD'83.
