Dean's message
Recognition and planning

Charles Goodacre, SD’71, MSD, addresses an audience of students, faculty, staff, alumni, Loma Linda University colleagues, and the community during a celebration held Monday, October 1, in the University Church on the Loma Linda University campus. The event was held to highlight the work of the School’s Strategic Planning Task Force, with plans to strengthen the School’s programs in many ways. The event was joyous, with testimonials from faculty, staff, and students who served on the Task Force.

Sustaining excellence in dental education during times of rapid change requires the coalescence of several factors. First, there must be recognition that everything can be

improved. Second, there must be organized, broad-based, and ongoing activities designed to identify areas where improvement can be made. Third, strategies must be developed whereby needed improvements can be introduced. Finally, plans must be developed and implemented in accordance with a prioritized timetable.

Recognizing the need for improvement, the School of Dentistry embarked on a program of strategic planning along with the strong support of the Alumni Association a little more than one year ago. Our strategic plan is now complete and will be sent to all alumni early in 2002. In support of this plan and to ensure its implementation, an office of strategic planning has been established in the School of Dentistry. Tom Rogers, SD’83, and Joe Caruso, SD’73, MS’75, have assumed leadership of this office in addition to the many other contributions they make to the School of Dentistry.

After you receive it, I invite each of you to evaluate our plan and provide your perspective.

We need the input and ideas of our alumni and friends as we continue to strive for sustained excellence in dental education, research, and service.

Charles Goodacre, SD’71, MSD
Dean
