DENTISTRY
Fall 2002

Educational CD series…

Thus far, the School has completed three interactive CDs used in computer-based learning.

• Principles of Tooth Preparation, Version 1.0 (Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MSD, dean, LLU School of Dentistry; endorsed by the American College of Prosthodontists). This CD-ROM course presents the scientific principles and clinical procedures that optimize success when preparing teeth for complete and partial coverage crowns. The presentation focuses on 10 important factors related to tooth preparation. To enhance viewer involvement, the information regarding principles and procedures is accompanied by synchronous audio and video presentations that focus attention upon the key factors being presented. There are multiple animations and over 300 digital images of prepared teeth. Several videos illustrate the steps in a tooth preparation and a 30-minute video demonstrates tooth preparation, impression making, and fabrication of a provisional restoration. The program is interactive and navigable. A 75-question, self-assessment examination is included in the CD.

• Implant Dentistry 2002 (edited by Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MSD, dean, LLU School of Dentistry) endorsed by the American College of Prosthodontists, the Academy of Osseointegration, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and made available to students and full-time faculty throughout North America as a result of an educational grant from Nobel Biocare, USA. This CD-ROM course guides each participant through the scientific principles and clinical procedures associated with the successful practice of implant dentistry. Basic and advanced procedures are presented using a synopsis format. The principles and clinical procedures are based on evidence whenever available, and they draw upon a broad range of clinical experience. The CD is richly illustrated with over 1,000 digital images, 6 surgery videos, 2 impression videos and several oral hygiene video clips. Data and references are provided. The program is interactive, easy to navigate, and includes a self-assessment examination with each topic. All the text and images can be downloaded and printed for review and use.

• Personal Finance Series for Health Professionals, 1st edition (By W. Patrick Naylor, DDS, MPH, MS, president, Naylor Financial Services, and adjunct professor, LLU School of Dentistry). This four-series CD-ROM program contains information on basic saving and investing concepts along with extensive discussions of mutual funds, stock selection, not to mention an entire series on tax-deferred investing. The program is suited for individuals who want an overview of saving and investing principles and examples. There is also a presentation dealing solely with the subjects of individual retirement accounts (IRAs), annuities, and retirement plans for health professionals whether they have their own private practice, work in a group practice, are employed by a hospital, or teach at a university. There is something for just about everyone, from students to practitioners to office personnel. Private practitioners can offer the program to their office staff in partial fulfillment of their fiduciary responsibility for their retirement program.

• Brown & Herbranson's Interactive Tooth Atlas. Developed in cooperation with the Stanford-NASA National Biocomputation Center and LLU School of Dentistry, this CD is designed to help the dentist and student visualize and learn the anatomy of human teeth. The disk includes computer models of 58 teeth developed from micro CT scans. These three-dimensional models can be rotated to be viewed from any angle and can be made transparent to view internal anatomy. Another viewing protocol allows for the interactive simultaneous viewing of digital photographs, semitransparent models, and x-rays around 360 degrees of rotation. Also included is an interactive viewing of a human skull. All of these protocols can be viewed in stereoscopic vision with the appropriate computer equipment. It also includes a large searchable database of x-rays of finished endodontic cases. This has not been previously available. An innovative section developed at LLU combines the didactic information presented in textbooks on tooth anatomy during the last 100 years. It illustrates the features and unique characteristics of each tooth using drawings with rollovers and text boxes. In addition, key comparisons of different teeth and tooth groups are illustrated and identified. This section is designed to be a study guide for the dental national board
examination. The Interactive Tooth Atlas will be available spring, 2003.
