Leadership changes in the department of
oral and maxillofacial surgery
Alan S. Herford, SD'94, MD, has accepted the position of chair, department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and director of the advanced education program effective June 1, 2002.
After graduating from the School of Dentistry in 1994, Dr. Herford studied at University of Texas at Dallas Southwestern Medical Center and received his MD degree in May, 1997. He completed the oral and maxillofacial surgery program at the same institution, receiving a professional certificate in June, 2000.
Dr. Herford joined the faculty of the School of Dentistry in 2000 and serves on the craniofacial anomalies board, LLU MC. His fields of interests are trauma and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Herford has taken part in mission trips with Two Thousand Smiles (cleft palate) and Healing the Children, with mission trips to Ecuador and Mexico.
In addition, he has made numerous scientific presentations, published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, and authored book chapters. He serves as a reviewer for Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal.
Dr. Herford is a diplomate in the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association, American Medical Association, American Trauma Society, California Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, among others.
Until Dr. Herford took over the position of chair and director, Dr. Philip J. Boyne provided excellent interim leadership. For his long and distinguished service, Loma Linda University has honored Dr. Boyne with the title professor emeritus, effective July 1, 2002.
