The year 2000! This has an auspicious ring to it. One should
look forward to great things occurring in such a year. As it turns out,
we are off to a good start in this regard. The 40th annual Alumni-Student Convention held February
10-14 was a great success. The new format for the Convention was well
received; the continuing education programs and other events were well
attended. The Homecoming Banquet on February 10 with Art Linkletter as
the featured speaker was a big hit. Mr. Linkletter entertained us with
his stories, humor, and positive outlook on life. Next year we will have
Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton, who has accepted our invitation
to speak at our 2001 Homecoming Banquet. She is known for her humor and
anecdotes with a great motivational message a real class act. Plan
to join us for that event, on Thursday evening, February 8, 2001. The National Dental Auxiliary will present a nationally-known,
inspirational speaker on Thursday morning during the next Convention.
Were planning to host tours of the School on Thursday afternoon,
showcasing the various clinical and academic areas. And of course the
class reunions will remain a highlight of the Convention on Saturday evening. The Alumni Association and the School of Dentistry continue
to look for a major gifts officer to assist in finding donors of major
gifts to the School. We need to create an endowment fund that can decrease
the financial pressure on the School and its students. Our students represent
the future of the profession and our Association. The School needs to
maintain a competitive position in attracting qualified Christian students
if it is to continue to meet its unique mission. Another exciting development is the Schools decision to embark on a strategic planning process to revisit its basic values and Mission Statement, and to envision a future as the best institution it can become. The Alumni Association has an important part to play in this process by providing input with respect to private practice. If you would like to contribute your thoughts or efforts, please contact me at the School of Dentistry at 909-558-8164. Thomas Rogers, SD83, MPH96
