Dental research presented at spring meetings

Seniors in the dental hygiene program at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry swept first, second, and third place dental hygiene table clinic awards in the April 14Anaheim meeting of the California Dental Association (CDA).

Paul Mendiola and Heather Mihalka, DH’00, were awarded first place with “A Survey of Disinfection Protocols for Water Lines in Private Dental Practices,”sponsored by James Kettering, PhD, professor of microbiology.

Jenny Kim, Sonali Patel, and Kim Uyeyama, DH’00, won second place with their project, “Efficacy of an Over-the-Counter Whitening Agent as Compared to a Professionally Prescribed Whitening Agent,” sponsored by Carlos Muñoz, DDS, MSD, professor of restorative dentistry and director of the Center for Dental Research.

Third place ribbons went to Darcie Bell, Laura Bretsch, and Michael Lents for “The Antimicrobial Action of Oral Rinses When Used for 15 Seconds,” sponsored by Dr. Kettering.

Junior dental students took third place in the CDA dental competition, with “Composite Repair Strength,” by Gregory Skeens, Scott Steedman, and Shane Tewis, sponsored by Dr. Kettering.

Among the finalists were Aaron Soeprono, Stanley Wernick and Robert Wells, with their children’s book, “Conquering Dental Phobia in Children,” sponsored by Dr. Muñoz.

At the California Dental Hygiene Association (CDHA) meeting held in conjunction with the CDA, Loma Linda University was well represented by third place winners Jacqueline Tatum, Brandy VanderDussen and ShellyWithers, DH’00, “Identification of Bacterial Contamination in Ultrasonic Handpieces,” sponsored by Dr. Kettering.

The American Association of Dental Schools (AADS) annual convention was held in April, in Washington, DC. Dental researchers from Loma Linda University presented posters and talks about their research. About 20 posters destined for AADS and IADR (International Association for Dental Research) meetings were prepared by School of Dentistry faculty and staff.

Melissa Wages, SD'00, presented her research, “www.Women'sOralHealth.org” at the annual session of the American Association of Dental Schools meeting in Washington, DC.

For her effort, Ms. Wages received the “Best Poster Award” for the Student Poster Session which was accompanied by a cash prize of $500.

She was also asked to orally present her findings at an AADS session entitled “Student Excellence in Education and Service.”

Ms. Wages’ research and development of the project was sponsored by Heidi Christensen, SD’83, MS, assistant professor of oral diagnosis, radiology, and pathology. The table clinic won first place at the 1999 Alumni-Student Convention and the 1999 spring session of the California Dental Association.

At the annual session of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) held in Honolulu in April, endodontic graduate students and faculty presented scientific papers and lectures. Dr. Nooshin Noghreian presented a paper in the graduate student section of the Oral Research Presentation program: “Hard tissue forming potential of MTA compared to common endodontic filling materials.”

Others presenting lectures were: Mahmoud Torabinejad, DDS, MSD, PhD, professor and director of the graduate program in endodontics, “Expanded clinical horizons of MTA;” and E. John Munce, SD‘78, PG‘88, assistant professor of endodontics, “Obstruction management.”
