| Responding to dental needs
in a city of 1.25 million people with only a few practicing dentists,
three dentists, Richard Wong, SD71, David Wong, SD90,
and Neal Chu, DDS, joined physicians and other professionals of the
US-China Christian Institute for a mission project at Zhongshan, China.
This is a city about 90 minutes by boat from Hong Kong. They took
with them 21 boxes of dental and medical equipment and supplies, including
instruments loaned to them by Ron Forde, SD83, director of service
learning at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, and supplies
from the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital. |
After a brief stop in Hong Kong on Monday, April 24, they set up
dental equipment on the third floor of the local city hospital.
Some 80 patients were already lining up for service before the team
even had the dental compressor in working order. (American equipment,
Hong Kong converter-transformer, Chinese sockets -- not a good mix!)
In all, they treated over 150 dental patients; advised and counseled
scores of others; gave instructions and supplies to workers in the
hospitals, students, their parents, Christian fellow-believers,
government officials and employees in the vast educational system
of that city.
