_________________________________________________________________________ Long-time faculty and staff retire in 2000
In 1960, Jim
Redfield, a young X-ray technician from Lansing, Michigan, moved to
Loma Linda with his bride Gloria, a nurse. He was hired by the first dean
of the School of Dentistry, Dr. Webster Prince. Mr. Redfield taught radiology
to dental and dental hygiene students for 32 years. During those years, Jim maintained and repaired dental equipment,
ordered and bought equipment, was responsible for fire and safety, planned
the design and remodeling projects throughout the School of Dentistry
and its associated campus buildings, worked as superintendent of construction,
and even sub-contracted some of it. In 1974, when the south addition to
Prince Hall was added, including Dental Supply, the amphitheater, labs,
and five-story tower, Jim was there. He also supervised construction and remodeling projects
in the Center for Dental Research and those projects connected with the
new pediatric dental clinic and the Dental Surgery Center.
For 25 years, from 1968 to 1993, Jim was assistant chief
of the Loma Linda Fire Department. When remembering highlights of his career, he mentions first
that he enjoyed working directly with the students. Robert Riegel, DDS, MS, professor of restorative
dentistry, retired on March 1, 2000, and School colleagues and friends
honored him with a party. The plaque presented to him by Douglass Roberts,
SD66, MS77, chair of the department, read: Loma Linda
University School of Dentistry wishes to recognize Robert Riegel, DDS,
MS, Chief, section of removable prosthodontics, Department of Restorative
Dentistry, and wishes to honor him for 10 years of exemplary caring Christian
service to students, patients, faculty and staff.
A lot of it was tabletop classroom demonstrations,
where we had to improvise sometimes, says Mr. Rogers. He also worked
part-time, repairing the PA system and even the towel dispensers.
Willis Schlenker, SD57, MS80, associate
professor of orthodontics, is headed for the golf course after June 30,
after his retirement from 25 years of teaching service to the School of
Dentistry. Dr. Schlenker is a member of the first class of dentistry,
who graduated in 1957.
Donald Beglau, SD62, associate professor of
restorative dentistry, had a golf tee time set for his first day of retirement,
July 3, 2000. He will continue his private practice of restorative dentistry
in Yucaipa; and will be teaching continuing education courses throughout
the next year. He also plans on spending more time with his seven grandchildren;
putting miles on both the motorhome and his sturdy hiking boots; and wetting
the fishing line. _________________________________________________________________________
