As 2003, the year marking our School's 50th anniversary, progresses, it has been inspiring to reflect upon the founding of our institution.
Many of you joined us as we celebrated this landmark in grand style during the Alumni Student Convention. On February 9, nearly 900 individuals gathered in the Gentry Auditorium for the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Celebration.
That evening we were honored by the presence of six of the seven living original faculty members and 13 of the School's earliest faculty members, as well as Drs. Charles T. Smith (dean, 19601971), and Judson Klooster (dean, 19711994). Former administrators and leaders also were recognized.

Many members of the class of 1957 were also present.
Many of our faculty have contributed to the field through scholarly activities. In order to honor these individuals and those who will follow, a Society of Scholars has been established, and 30 charter members were inducted into the Society during the Commemorative Celebration. These individuals have authored 3,035 publicationsan average of 101 per member. (See sidebar).
Recognizing that our School was founded upon spiritual values and from its start provided programs that emulate the dental care that Jesus would provide, we continue to pursue the dream of a more ideal environment and more complete executions of the University theme of wholeness for humankind. In order to continue to pursue excellence in dental education the School was rededicated during the Alumni Student Convention.
As the years continue to pass, new pages are being added to our School's rich history.
During the School's 45th graduation ceremonies on May 25, Ryan Colburn and Shayne Hover became third-generation dental alumni as they graduated with the class of 2003, and their pictures are featured on the cover of this issue.
Perhaps the essence of why we are here was summarized best by Dr. Ralph Steinman. Dr. Steinman is 92 years old and was unable to attend the Celebration, but sent warm greetings and closed by saying, "May the School of Dentistry continue to serve the world's needs."
