Pierre Fauchard Academy Awards Scholarship to John Nelsen, SD'99

Dean and J. NelsonDean Goodacre presents the Pierre Fauchard Academy award to John Nelsen, SD'99. John Nelsen, senior dental student and former student missionary to Ecuador, has been awarded a $1,550 scholarship from the Pierre Fauchard Academy. John was called to an appointment on December 1 with Charles J. Goodacre, SD'71, MSD, dean of the School of Dentistry, not knowing the reason for his summons. When John was told of his award, he broke into a big grin of delight (and relief.) The award recognizes John's "outstanding leadership, accomplishments, and dedication to advancement of dental literature."

Alumni/professors Honored by Professional Organizations

Miller
Mark P. Miller
* Two School of Dentistry alumni were among six general practitioners in California who earned the Academy of General Dentistry's prestigious Mastership Award at a special ceremony held in Boston in July. It is not an easy task to accomplish this, according to the Academy. First, one must achieve fellowship status by completing 500 course hours within 10 years and then pass a written examination. The road to Mastership involves 600 additional hours, 400 of which must be earned by participating in hands-on courses sanctioned by the AGD. There are in excess of 100,000 dentists in the United States, and only about 1,400 have achieved Mastership status since they were first awarded in 1972.

M. W. Lee
Ming-Way Lee
One Master honored is Mark P. Miller, SD'72, who has practiced general and cosmetic dentistry in Santa Ana and Tustin since 1972. "I am proud to be a graduate of Loma Linda University," he says, "and I am continually proud of the fine heritage Loma Linda has had in its faculty."

The other Master honored is Ming-Way Lee, SD'86, associate professor of restorative dentistry in the International Dentist Program.

Johnson
Ebenezer Johnson
* Ebenezer Johnson, BDS, SD'88, assistant professor of restorative dentistry in the International Dentist Program, has been awarded a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, at the July convocation of AGD. Dr. Johnson completed the exam in 1991, then took more than 700 hours of continuing education in AGD-recognized courses. Dr. Johnson lives in Loma Linda, and practices with his wife, Rachel Johnson, DDS. He received OKU membership in 1989.

J. C. Munce
John C. Munce
* John C. Munce, SD'78, PG'88, Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and assistant professor of endodontics, was recently awarded Fellowship in the Academy of Dentistry International. Fellowship in the Academy is an honor bestowed upon dentists who have distinguished themselves in their profession and who have been nominated for the award by an active Fellow of the Academy. The Academy is an honor organization founded to assist in providing continuing dental education to the dental profession in lesser developed countries. In addition, the Academy is involved in humanitarian projects around the world and through its Foundation provides grants and funds for research, patient care and professional improvement.

LLU Student Table Clinic First in ADA/Dentsply Competition

Students with display
Sam Kim, Caroline Le, and Dan Nguyen
Sam Kim, SD’99, was first place winner with the table clinic, Comparative Analysis of Alternatives to Traditional Post and Core Systems on Severely Flared Canals of Endodontically Treated Teeth at the ADA/Dentsply Student Clinician Competition during the American Dental Association Annual Session in San Francisco, October 23-28, 1998.

Previously, Sam and his classmates Caroline Le and Dan Nguyen had placed first at the 1998 California Dental Association Spring Session in Anaheim, and second at the 1998 Alumni-Student Convention held on this campus in February.

At the recent ADA meeting, Sam participated in Category 1: Clinical Application and Technique, along with student representatives from 20 other dental schools. Only one member of each table clinic team is allowed to make the presentation and field questions.

As first place winner, Sam was an honored guest at the ADA banquet honoring the ADA president, and also received a travel prize to attend the midwinter meeting of the Chicago Dental Society.

Sponsoring the Loma Linda University entry was Douglass Roberts, SD’66, MS’77, professor of restorative dentistry. Also attending the ADA meeting was Fred Berry, DDS, associate professor of restorative dentistry and coordinator of the LLU Student Table Clinic Program.

Three other Loma Linda University School of Dentistry students have done well in this competition during the last few years. Vincent Chee, SD’92, placed first at the 1991 ADA Meeting in Seattle; James Henderson, SD’95, placed third at the 1994 ADA Meeting in New Orleans; and Franco Audia, SD’97, placed first at the 1996 ADA Meeting in Orlando.

Loma Linda University was recognized as being one of only 19 dental schools to have participated in each of the 40 competitions which have been sponsored by Dentsply International.

Congratulations to the team of Sam Kim, Caroline Le, and Dan Nguyen, on a job well done.
