The School of Dentistry has introduced Loma Linda University's first online course, designed to meet the continuing education needs of dental practitioners through a new and innovative format that will be time- and cost-effective, says Patty Hoerner, assistant director of continuing dental education.

"This problem-based patient treatment course will educate dentists who have access to the Internet, enhance their knowledge and clinical practice as well as providing them with the ability to obtain continuing dental education credit without having to leave their home or practice," says Jaime Lozada, DDS, PG'87, PG'95, associate professor and director of implant dentistry, in the department of restorative dentistry.

The last five years have seen an exponential growth of the World Wide Web, and dentists throughout the country have indicated a need for interactive continuing dental education.
This first course, "Implant Dentistry Problem-Based Learning: Treatment for Patients With Single Missing Teeth, Versions 1 and 2," is authored and taught by Dr. Lozada; Kitichai Rungcharassaeng, DDS, MS'98, assistant professor of implant dentistry; Robert Gougalof, DMD, assistant professor of implant dentistry; and Alejandro Kleinman, DDS, assistant professor of implant dentistry.
Users may register via e-mail, telephone, mail, or fax.

The next online course will be "Immediately Loaded Root Form Implants: Patient Selection, Techniques, and Long-term Results."

A demonstration of the online course is available at </llu/dentistry/cde>.

School of Dentistry Top Provider of CDE--Again

The School of Dentistry at Loma Linda University earned recognition as the top provider of continuing dental education in terms of courses offered and number of attendees, according to a survey by the Association of Continuing Dental Educators conducted among the 55 dental schools in the U.S. and Canada.

For the second consecutive year, LLU School of Dentistry sponsored the most courses (164) and had the largest number of attendees (7,141). While other entities, such as dental societies and dental products companies also provide CDE to dentists, dental schools are the largest providers.

The success of LLU in this area can be attributed to careful selection of high quality CE lecturers, which include both LLU faculty and invited faculty, convenient location and attractive scheduling. The CDE staff of Loma Linda University, which is not as big as those in many other schools, has managed the program well and deserves the recognition earned.
