During School of Dentistry orientation, Sylvia Davis,
MA, director of admissions, provided a profile of the incoming classes.
Following are some interesting statistics about the dentistry, class
of 2004; and dental hygiene, class of 2002, students:
DentistryMales comprise the majority (62 students) and 31 percent
of the class (29 students) is female. Of the 91 students accepted, 16
are married.
Ethnic backgrounds are as follows: Asian Pacific, 44; Caucasian, 37;
Hispanic, 8; African American, 1. The average age is 26.
The average GPA for the incoming class is 3.34 (science courses, 3.21;
non-science 3.46).
Seventy-four percent of the class is Seventh-day Adventist.
Twenty-one students graduated from Pacific Union College, Angwin; followed
by La Sierra University (Riverside), 17; University of CaliforniaBerkeley,
Cal State (CS) Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, CS
Fullerton, Bakersfield, San Bernardino, and CS San Marcos, 14; Walla
Walla College, College Place, Washington, 9; and Southern Adventist
University (Collegedale, Tennessee), 6.
Out-of-state students are from Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, Tennessee, West
Virginia, Washington state, and Utah. There is one student from Canada.
Dental HygieneOf 42 new students, 41 are female. Eight are married,
and five are parents.
The average GPA of the incoming dental hygiene class is 3.32, with a
science GPA of 3.13.
Eight students attended Crafton Hills College, Redlands; and La Sierra
University; Pacific Union College; and Walla Walla College each send
7 alumni.
Thirty-two students are Caucasian; 5 are Asian; 4 are Hispanic; and
1 is African-American. The average age is 28.
Thirty-four of the students were born in the United States (26 in California;
the rest from Idaho, Minnesota; New York; and Washington), with the
remaining students born in Canada, Honduras,Korea, Mexico, Singapore,
and Sweden.
Twenty-four are Seventh-day Adventist, and the remaining students are
from faiths including Baptist, Catholic, Jewish, Lutheran, and Methodist.
Six of the incoming students are daughters or sisters of School of Dentistry
alumni.
