School offers continuing dental education to honor the Kloosters On Sunday, October 1, the fifth annual Judson Klooster Symposium took place in the amphitheater of Prince Hall. Leif K. Bakland, SD'63, professor and chair of endodontics and associate dean of advanced education, School of Dentistry, served as moderator for the symposium. Attendees, who were eligible for seven hours of California continuing dental education, listened to lectures from faculty members in the departments of restorative dentistry, dental anesthesiology, endodontics, and periodontics in the School of Dentistry. In the morning, presentations included "Caries Risk AssessmentStatus 2000," (Douglass Roberts, SD'66, MS'77, professor and chair, restorative dentistry); "Denture Classification System: New and Improved!" (Dan B. Hall, DDS, assistant professor of restorative dentistry); "Ridge Resorption, Calcium, Protein: What's the Connection?" (Ronald Blank, SD'75A, associate professor of restorative dentistry); "Tooth Bleaching Safety," (Yiming Li, DDS, MSD, PhD, professor of restorative dentistry); and "General Anesthesia, Conscious Sedation, Oral Sedation: What's the Difference?" (Michael Mashni, SD'92, PG'94, associate professor of dental anesthesiology). In the afternoon, lectures included: "Vital Pulp Therapy and Apexification: New Treatments" (Shahrokh Shabahang, DDS, assistant professor of endodontics); "What If I Suspect My Professional Colleague is Abusing Drugs?" (William Hooker, PhD, associate dean of student affairs); and "Most Common Causes of Dental Malpractice," (Roland C. Bainer, Esq., private law practice in Corona, California). The final two seminars of the day were "Periodontal Disease: Is It in Your Genes?" (Dimitris Tatakis, DDS, PhD, professor of periodontics); and "Dental Jeopardythe Game for All Dental Professionals," (Doyle Nick, SD'78, PG'94, associate professor of restorative dentistry). The annual event was established in 1996 and the speakers present their lectures honorarium free. Half of the profits from the event are applied to the Judson Klooster Scholarship Endowment Fund. The Fund, named for Judson Klooster, DDS, dean emeritus of the School of Dentistry and his wife, Arlene, DH'71, was established by an initial grant of $250,000 from the Lindgren Foundation. The Fund is used to provide scholarships to students in the School of Dentistry. The Sixth Annual Judson Klooster Symposium will take place October 7, 2001. Topics include: aesthetic implants; cleaning implants; dentures and dental lab; oral-facial pain; periodontics; pediatrics; ethics, and California Dental Law.
