GRDN 601 Practice Management (audit only) 2 units
Designed to prepare the student for specialty practice, concepts of employment, records, incorporating, insurance, and practice planning.

GRDN 622 Biomedical Science I (audit only) 4 units
This two-quarter course is offered every other year (alternating with Biomedical Science II) during fall and winter quarters. The course content is applied oral bacteriology, immunology, topics in oral medicine, applied pharmacology and orofacial pain. Course participants are expected to have basic knowledge in the various topic areas since this course is constructed on an advanced level of understanding.

GRDN 623 Biomedical Science II (audit only) 4 units
Advanced, two-quarter course offered every other year (alternating with GRDN 622) during autumn and winter quarters. Course content includes cell biology, applied oral pathology, biology of hard tissues, physiology, and biochemistry. Since the course is constructed on an advanced level of understanding students are expected to have prior basic knowledge in the various topic areas.

GRDN 632 Basic Microsurgery Technique 2 units
The Basic Microsurgery Technique course has been designed as an integrated 40 hour laboratory course tailored to the needs of the individual students. This course provides the individual with the principles and application of microscope operation and use, microinstrumentation, microdissection, micromanipulation and microsuturing techniques. These skills are then further enhanced through the performance of various microvascular and microneural repair procedures.

A separate fee of $1,400 is charged for the Microsurgery Course taken by residents in endodontics, implant dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and periodontics.

OMFS 604 Selected Topics in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 1 unit
A weekly seminar covering selected topics in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. A rotating two-year schedule of topics are covered. Following a lecture on these topics, recent representational clinical cases are presented and used as the basis for review and discussion, enhancing knowledge base and critical thinking. A monthly Grand Rounds is given by respected guest speakers who are considered experts in their respective fields, covering current topics in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and practice management. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

OMFS 605 Integrated Orthodontics and Surgical Correction of Dentofacial Deformities 1 unit
A monthly multidisciplinary seminar course emphasizing preoperative diagnosis, planning, intraoperative procedures, and postoperative care of orthognathic patients. This includes description of congenital and developmental deformities with an emphasis on all aspects of surgical-orthodontics patient management leading to critical thinking and decision making. Patients selected include a wide range of dentofacial deformities. Preoperative skeletal, dental, and soft tissue analyses are performed. The importance of accurate cephalometric analysis in treatment planning, including accurate prediction tracings, is emphasized. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

OMFS 606 Applied Surgical Anatomy 1 unit
Designed to enable the resident to master the anatomic principles involved in clinical diagnosis and in assessing clinical problem areas encountered in various health care delivery situations. Detailed discussion of applied anatomic consequences of various surgical and treatment procedures and the anatomic aspects of emergencies occurring in practice are discussed in detail including cadaveric dissection. Emphasis is placed upon knowledge of the vascular supply and neuroinnervation of the structures of the oral cavity and adjacent areas of the head and neck. The application of this material is discussed in terms of actual clinical case presentations.

OMFS 607 Principles of Medical History, Physical Examination, and Clinical Medicine 2 units
A course focused on developing accurate history taking and physical examination skills. Specific topics include review of organ systems and associated pathology (physical and laboratory), hospital protocol and charting. Residents perform history and physical (H&Ps) on medical and surgical patients. Proficiency at developing differential diagnosis of common medical and surgical problems is also emphasized.

OMFS 608 Surgical Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Conference Pathology Conference 0.5 unit
Recent pathology cases are used as the basis for review and discussion of the common and ominous lesions that are encountered. Different diagnosis and patient management are emphasized. Guest lecturers cover selected topics in Oral and Maxillofacial pathology. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

OMFS 609 Literature Review in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 0.5 unit
A monthly discussion of recent literature from selected journals. Classic landmark articles and their impact on the specialty are also reviewed. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

OMFS 614 Experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Practice 7 units
The residents are trained in various aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This includes training in dentoalveolar surgery, complicated fractures of the facial bones, reconstructive maxillofacial surgery, surgical orthognathic correction, treatment of developmental and acquired deformities of the jaw, implant surgery, temporal mandibular joint surgery, and osseous grafting of post-resection and post traumatic maxillofacial defects. Study continues in the application of general anesthesia to ambulatory outpatient surgery patients. Residents are trained in assuming full responsibility of all aspects of the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. Advanced clinical training in the sub-specialty areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as training through off-service rotations with internal medicine, plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck surgery, general surgery, and other specialties. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

OMFS 615 Trends in Medicine and Surgery 2 units
Off service specialty seminars on a wide range of topics including anesthesia, internal medicine, ICU care, general surgery, and various specialty topics. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

OMFS 616 Application of Surgical Principles to Orthognathic Surgery 1 unit
An introductory multidisciplinary lecture seminar emphasizing teaching preoperative diagnosis, treatment p lanning, intraoperative procedures, and postoperative care of orthognathic patients, description of congenital and developmental deformities with emphasis on all aspects of surgical-orthodontic patient management.

OMFS 617 Critical Decision Thinking in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 12 units
A weekly seminar designed to expand the participant’s skills in critical decision making as it pertains to patient care in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Participants will present cases weekly of proposed surgical experiences reviewing data gathering, treatment alternatives and treatment of complications. Additionally selected post-treatment cases will be presented to review the proposed treatment versus the actual outcome as a basis for an opportunity for the participant to be involved with an outcome assessment analysis. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

OMFS 618 Introduction to General Anesthesia 1 unit
Introduces the theory and practice of general dentistry. 

OMFS 697A Research 1 unit
The first part of research is devoted to identifying a research project, preparing a proposal and obtaining approval for the protocol.

OMFS 697B Research 1 unit
The second part of research covers the actual research actively including data collection, data evaluations, and quarterly presentations.
