Pediatric Dental Alumni Newsletter
August 2003
| Contents of this issue: |
The first Loma Linda University pediatric dental alumni reunion was held at Marie Callender's in Ontario on February 9, 2003 in conjunction with the LLU Alumni Student Convention. Dr. Curtis Wiggins sponsored the breakfast for the residents.
It was a chance to reunite. The LLU advanced educational program in pediatric dentistry started in 1994. Since then it has nurtured 26 alumni.
An interest in having an alumni association was brought up. Nominations and secret ballot votes were taken. The result is, Maria Sheu (that's me) accepted to keep the alumni in touch by annual newsletters, and call for reunion.
With the formation of the alumni association, there will be opportunities to hold future get-togethers such as this.
LLU is pleased to have Dr. Bonnie Nelson, LLUSD'88, serving as chair for the department of pediatric dentistry. She was inaugurated as chair in February 2003. She completed her certificate in pediatric dentistry at Oregon Health Sciences University in 1990. She was in private practice in Sahougal, WA, for eleven years until she accepted the faculty position in the dental school in 2001. She has been the recipient of professional awards including Omicron Kappa Upsilon, LLUSD Alumni "Student fo the Year," and a Certificate of Merit from the American Society of Dentistry for Children.
She replaces Todd Milledge, SD'99 PG'95, who served as department chair since January 31, 1997. Thank you, Dr. Milledge, for your years of dedication and excellent leadership in the department. May God continue to bless your work. Dr. Milledge will continue to serve the School as a full-time faculty member.

Maria asked me to write something really important for this newsletter. So let's talk about golf. First of all:
- We're not playing enough.
- My swing has been described as a full body dry heave.
- Dean Walker and I played at the oldest U.S. public course in the Bronx, NY, while at the AAPD meeting. (Whoops, were we supposed to be at some class?)
So do you think golf is the most important thing? Well then, let me tell you about my kids.
- I love them a whole lot.
- They are married to wonderful women. Now Rae and I have the girls we always hoped for.
- I love them a whole lot.
Oh, you don't like that one either? Well then, let me tell you how proud I am of the graduates of our program.
- You are wonderful!
- I miss having you here!
- The world is a better place because of the contributions you are all making in caring for her children!
Best wishes, both personally and professionally

This year's Fun Day
By Sheila Harris
Fun day came at an unsettling time for our class with the boards impending the following week. We were tense and were debating on forfeiting fun day all together. So mid morning on that beautiful Southern California day, we caravanned out in search of "fun".
Our caravan took us to to Laguna Beach. The road dead-ends where the land met the ocean and just to the side lay the historic Laguna Beach Hotel. The Laguna beach hotel is beautiful with a garden full of tropical plants and jasmine on the side for weddings and events. The seven of us grabbed a dining table as close to the water as possible. We talked about upcoming wedding events of Jared and Sunil, ate great food and had other patrons take pictures of us together.
As we finished, J.P. took a group picture of the 6 of us in the quaint garden gazebo. We journeyed out to the Newport Beach area and walked out to the pier. The group wanted to take a ferry out to get a frozen banana.
By this time Pete, Cecilia and I were getting nervous about the volume of material that we needed to cram into our heads by the time Boards came, with so much at stake we regrettably asked to cut the trip short. I'm sure this came at a disappointment to the rest of the group. So we stopped by a local ice cream shop got some cariogenic snacks and ventured home.
Even though fun day was cut short, we still brought back memories of being with good friends. We still don't know if we passed the board yet, so I can't tell you if we should have gone that day or studied instead!!!
Children's Dentistry of Redlands
Together, Drs. Jennifer Hoffer and Isabella Piedra-Muņoz opened Children's Dentistry of Redlands in October 2002. the theme of the office transitions from the serene beach shore in the reception area to the soothing colorful underwater world in the operating rooms. Six-year-old Julianne says she likes holding Mr. Dolphin whild Dr. Jen works on her teeth.

The office is located at 710 Brookside Avenue, Suite #6, Redlands, CA, 92373. The telephone number is (909) 793-7274 and the fax number is (909) 793-7781.
Congratulations to the Graduates
They call themselves CPS, which stands for Child Protective Services, or better known as Cecilia, Pete, and Sheila.
"They will be greatly missed. They are a cheerful group of residents. They add a lot of life to the clinic," says Magda Lavergne.
"They were a fun group to joke around with, but they were also good teachers at the same time. We will definitely miss having them around as co-residents," says Jared Nation.
