Goals and objectives of the advanced education program in pediatric dentistry at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry.

1. To prepare the student to be a specialist who is proficient in providing comprehensive preventive, and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health-care needs.

Objectives:
  • a. Students will be able to diagnose and treatment plan pediatric dental patients assigned to them.
  • b. Students will become proficient in the comprehensive treatment of a wide variety of pediatric dental patients.
  • c. Students will be exposed to "service" within the context of delivering pediatric dental care to their patients.

2. To provide an educational structure that complies with the standards set forth by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Objective:
  • a. The program curriculum will be compared to the "standards" for advanced education in pediatric dentistry as set forth by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

3. To prepare students for the practice of pediatric dentistry.

Objectives:
  • a. Students will receive information in the area of practice management that will attempt to prepare them for the practice of pediatric dentistry.
  • b. Goal #1 and #2 will prepare students for clinical activities in the practice of pediatric dentistry.

4. To train pediatric dentists who have participated in pediatric dental research.

Objectives:
  • a. The student will develop a research protocol.
  • b. The student will conduct a research project that is completed in a scientific format.

5. To train pediatric dentists who have participated in pediatric dental teaching.

Objectives:
  • a. Students will participate in the undergraduate teaching program of pediatric dentistry.
  • b. Second year students will serve as mentors of first year students.

6. To prepare the student for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Objectives:
  • a. Review the reading list of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
  • b. Encourage students to participate in certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
