Individual Course Descriptions

PERI 524 The Periodontium 2 units
Review of the literature concerning the anatomy (macro-, micro-, and ultrastructural) and the physiology of the periodontium.

PERI 531 Periodontal Pathology 10 units
Review of the literature which forms the basis for current concepts of the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

PERI 601 Periodontal Therapy 12 units
Review of the literature which forms the basis for current concepts of the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

PERI 604 Current Periodontal and Implant Literature 18 units
Review of the literature which forms the basis for current concepts of the treatment of periodontal diseases. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

PERI 605 Implant Literature Review 4 units
Review of the literature providing the basis for implant surgery as well as concepts for implant restoration. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

PERI 611 Introduction to Periodontics 2 units
Overview of the clinical science of periodontics including epidemiology, etiology, therapy, clinical methods, and record keeping.

PERI 614 Implant Treatment Planning 24 units
Attendees will consist of residents enrolled in two disciplines (i.e. Advanced Education in Periodontics and Advanced Prosthodontics). These students will be required to present cases which involve mutual interests. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

PERI 624 IV Conscious Sedation 4 units
Prepares the postdoctoral periodontics graduate student to meet requirements for certification by the California Board of Dentistry in the administration of conscious (intravenous) sedation and to meet the requirements of the Commission of Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association for the teaching of conscious sedation. Includes seminars, laboratory exercises, and literature review seminars that enhance the student's proficiency in the theory and practice of conscious sedation in the dental office. Open to other graduate dentistry programs.

PERI 634 Clinical Conference 9 units
Case management conference to assist the students in diagnosis, treatment planning, and the management of periodontal diseases and surgical implant surgery. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

PERI 654 Practice Teaching in Periodontics 4 units
Experience in teaching the undergraduate dentistry students. Repeated registrations are required to fulfill the total units.

PERI 697A Research 1 unit
The first part of research is devoted to identifying a research project, preparing a proposal and obtaining approval for the protocol.

PERI 697B Research 1 unit
The second part of research covers the actual research activity including data collection and preparing a written report.

PERI 698 Thesis (M.S. track only) 1 unit

PERI 725 Clinical Practice in Periodontics 72 units
Clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. A minimum of 180 clock hours per quarter (12 qtrs) are required to fulfill the total units of 72.

PERI 726 Clinical Practice in Implant Dentistry 24 units
Clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment regarding implant surgery. A minimum of 60 clock hours per quarter (12 qtrs) are required to fulfill the total units of 24.

PERI 746 General Anesthesia Clinic 3 units
Clinical rotation including physical evaluation, airway management, management of medical emergencies in patients scheduled for anesthesia, and introduction to conscious sedation. A minimum of 90 clock hours are required to fulfill the total units of 3.

GRDN 514 Introduction to Biomedical Research 4 units

This introductory course provides residents with basic information necessary to develop a research proposal. It will culminate in the delivery of an approved Research Proposal, suitable for submission to the resident’s departmental Research Guidance Committee (RGC). The course has two major components: 1) Applied Biostatistics and 2) Proposal Writing. Within the Proposal Writing segment, the course will focus on a) critical evaluation of the literature, b) proposal design and methodology, and c) proposal writing. Lectures, seminars.

GRDN 535 Clinical Oral Pathology 2 units
Emphasis on oral manifestations of disease. Diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of various oral neoplasms.

GRDN 609 Professional Ethics 2 units
Designed to provide students with a theological and philosophical framework for professional ethics. Topics include individual rights, autonomy, informed consent, and responsibilities of the professional person in the dental field, as well as in society as a whole.

GRDN 622 Biomedical Science I 4 units
This two-quarter course is offered every other year (alternating with Biomedical Science II) during fall and winter quarters. The course content is applied oral bacteriology, immunology, topics in oral medicine, applied pharmacology and orofacial pain. Course participants are expected to have basic knowledge in the various topic areas since this course is constructed on an advanced level of understanding.

GRDN 623 Biomedical Science II 4-5 units
This two-quarter course is offered every other year (alternating with Biomedical Science I) during fall and winter quarters. The course content is cell biology, applied oral pathology, biology of hard tissues, physiology, and biochemistry. Course participants are expected to have basic knowledge in the various topic areas since this course is constructed on an advanced level of understanding.

GRDN 632 Basic Microsurgery Technique 2 units
The Basic Microsurgery Technique course has been designed as an integrated 40 hour laboratory course tailored to the needs of the individual students. This course provides the individual with the principles and application of microscope operation and use, microinstrumentation, microdissection, micromanipulation, and microsuturing techniques. These skills are then further enhanced through the performance of various microvascular and microneural repair procedures.

A seperate fee of $800.00 is charged for the Microsurgery Course taken by residents in endodontics, implant dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery and periodontics.

RELE 524 Christian Bioethics 3 units
Course selection is left to the discretion of the program director or student.
