*Introduction

Griggs HallReligion is an integral part of Loma Linda University's role as a health-sciences institution, and is vigorously supported by the University's administration and Board of Trustees.

The roots of the School of Religion go back to the inception of the University in 1905. The founders of Loma Linda University were committed to the idea that religious instruction must occupy a central place in all curricula.

The School of Religion is committed to the following tasks, guided by the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church: it will focus Christian "wholeness" for faculty and students in their personal and professional lives and witness; it will provide a religion curriculum emphasizing foundational, ethical, and relational studies; it will foster and support research in the foundational, ethical, and relational disciplines; and it will serve the University, the Church, and the larger world community by personal involvement in fostering deeper spirituality, theological integrity, and social justice.

The School of Religion, currently with thirteen full-time members and more than a dozen adjunct members, teaches courses in religion for all of the schools of Loma Linda University. In addition, the School of Religion directs the master of arts program in biomedical and clinical ethics and is responsible for the operation of the Center for Christian Bioethics. The Center's Thompson Library houses nearly 5,000 books and receives more than twenty journals in the area of ethics. Students are welcome to use the resources of the Thompson Library, located on the first level of Coleman Pavilion.

The Center for Spiritual Life & Wholeness was established in 1998 to foster and nurture spiritual life and wholeness in health scientist, health care professionals, their families, their students, and their patients. The Center also supports research exploring the multiple innerweaving connections in the healing, health, wholeness, and restoration of broken and ill human beings.
