A Guide for Gifts & Bequests for Loma Linda Contributors
What Your Giving Can Do
for the University, Medical Center, and Children's Hospital
Private gifts to our institutions help to support a great variety of programs in Loma Linda's academic and clinical departments. While the tangible benefits of contributors' gifts are encouraged by the tax codes in the United States, the intangible rewards can be even greater. Giving to Loma Linda University, Loma Linda University Medical Center, and Loma Linda University Children's Hospital actually involves donors in building the teaching, clinical, research and service programs of these institutions. Through their gifts, donors share in the pride intrinsic to Loma Linda's tradition of excellence, and in the accomplishments of alumni, staff, faculty and scientists. The gifts of alumni and other individual friends, patients, foundations and corporations all strengthen the institutions at Loma Linda and help all of us to fulfill the goals that we have in common for service to humanity.
Unrestricted Gifts
Unrestricted gifts provide an essential and flexible resource for the institutions at Loma Linda to respond to unforeseen opportunities. These gifts are placed in special unrestricted accounts for administrators to use in meeting special needs that may arise during a fiscal year. Unrestricted gifts made to a specific institution such as the University or Medical Center will benefit that institution. Unrestricted gifts usually total less than five percent of the contributions received--far less than our institutions require to meet unanticipated needs and opportunities. These gifts may support an outstanding student who has special financial needs, sponsor a special program or conference, or move a particular pilot-test forward. Loma Linda encourages all donors to allocate, whenever possible, at least a portion of their giving to unrestricted funds to enable Loma Linda to strengthen its comprehensive educational, research, clinical, and service programs.
Financial Aid for Students
Financial aid offers donors a very direct way for their contributions to have a positive impact. Gifts toward scholarships and loans assist deserving students in meeting the ever-escalating costs of a quality education. They also provide donors with the satisfaction of helping men and women reach their full academic and professional potential.
Approximately 80 percent of the University's students receive some form of financial assistance, whether this is in the form of loans, scholarships, fellowships or assistantships. Finding resources for student assistance is a high priority for the University. As a donor, you may wish to support existing loan and scholarship programs or endow a specially named student aid fund.
Faculty Development
A vital, active and creative faculty is the key to excellence in a university setting. Our institutions must do all they can to provide a climate for faculty to be creative in their teaching. As a contributor, you can support this high priority by contributing toward course development, faculty research and the advanced training that may be required in emerging fields.
Fully or partially endowed professorial chairs are significant means through which donors can establish a legacy of quality in the educational program at Loma Linda. Endowed chairs provide ways of attracting and recognizing outstanding teaching and research professionals at Loma Linda (see endowed professorial chairs for more information).
Research
Central to Loma Linda University's mission is research. The amount and type of research that an institution of higher education fosters is a measure of its academic quality. Many contributors to Loma Linda make gifts to enhance the University's excellent reputation for basic and clinical research. The research pursued at the University is as varied as the health sciences coursework it offers. Research funding is needed in the basic sciences, in the clinical areas, and within each of the University's six schools.
There are many programs and areas to which contributors to Loma Linda University, Medical Center, and Children's Hospital may designate their gifts. Examples include the establishment of the School of Medicine's academic and research building, the development of treatment protocols for cancer therapy using the proton accelerator facility, the infant heart transplantation program, a new academic facility for the School of Allied Health Professions, a student loan or scholarship program, or a special program to help children who have been abused.
The University, Medical Center, and Children's Hospital are ready to explore and discuss with you how your support can best be designated to an area of your choice. We also stand ready to discuss with you the many ways in which you may make gifts, whether in the present with cash or other liquid assets, or in the future through forms of trust giving and bequests.
