Welcome students and friends!
My name is Dr. Robert E. (Bob) Ford, and I am a professor of international sustainable development and social policy in the School of Science and Technology, Loma Linda University (LLU) located in Loma Linda, California. I hold a PhD in geography and earth science from the University of California, Riverside. I also have an MA in social anthropology and MPH in international public health from Loma Linda University and a BA in history and Spanish from Pacific Union College.
My teaching and research is interdisciplinary and spans the biophysical, information, and social sciences within the Departments of Social Work and Social Ecology and Earth and Biological Sciences at LLU. I also cooperate closely with the Department of Environmental Health, in the School of Public Health and their new Geoinformatics unit.
I specialize in cultural and political ecology and science and technology for sustainability, within the exciting fields of nature/society thought and social policy as well as applied Earth System Science (ESSE21). Much of my research, teaching and professional career has focused on the international human dimensions of global environmental change (IHDP) and its role in sustainable development policy and practice in Africa and Latin America . Just prior to coming to LLU I spent four years as a natural resources policy advisor with USAID's agriculture and natural resources teams (LRMT and Ag) in Washington, D.C. where I focused on geographic information for sustainable development (GISD and MyCOE) as well as other roles in knowledge management and international environmental policy. I've also served as an academic administrator and field researcher in Africa as well as consulted with ADRA International and other development NGOs (see my research homepage at LLU SST).
