Department of Social Work and Social Ecology
Federal Work Study: Master's degree programs
Work opportunities may be available to students after financial need is determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The majority of funding for on-campus employment is provided by the United States government for United States citizens and certain eligible non-citizens.
Master's-level students in the Department of Social Work and Social Ecology who are enrolled in Practicum Seminar Courses (
757 and 787 series) may be eligible to receive work study funding for all or a portion of their required field hours.
The hourly rate for a master’s-level student in the Department of Social Work and Social Ecology is $13.90 per hour.
Steps to determining Federal Work Study eligibility:
Fill out the application for
Federal Student Aid. Once you are accepted to the MSW program, work with the Office of Financial Aid to determine the amount of money you are eligible for. This amount is indicated in your Budget Award Letter (see
sample letter).
NOTE: If a student’s Budget Award Letter indicates eligibility exceeds that which is required above, the student MAY CHOOSE to earn the excess amount by applying for another work study job on campus. The excess amount may not be earned by accruing additional field practicum hours.
Check your eligibility by looking at your award letter by following these steps:
- LOG INTO Student Services (Banner)
- Financial Aid Menu
- My Award Information
- Budget and Award Information (Award Letter) for academic year (i.e. 2008-2009).
Make sure you have at least XXXX of eligibility per quarter (see chart below).
If you do have enough eligibility:
Print out your letter and submit it along with appropriate paperwork to Wendy Hoopes. Eligibility figures below are based on an hourly pay rate of $13.90 per quarter.

+ Stipend = students who receive Title IV-E, Prop 63, or a paid internship. Contact the
department to verify eligibility amounts before proceeding to adjust eligibility levels.
If you do not have enough or any eligibility:
Contact
Lois Wheeler in the Office of Financial Aid to ask if you can receive FWS funding of at least XXXX per quarter. If you have less than XXXX per quarter or nothing at all, Lois may be able to increase your eligibility to the proper level OR give you eligibility if you have none. Once your eligibility is adjusted to at least XXXX, print out your letter and submit it with the necessary
paperwork to Wendy Hoopes. Bring your original, signed social security card along with your driver’s license when you turn in your completed
paperwork.
Apply online:
After filling out
paperwork and submitting it to Wendy Hoopes, please request instructions on how to apply for the position online.
Once a student has applied to receive work study funding for his or her field practicum hours, he or she does not need to resubmit paperwork when going from 757 to 787 series courses. At the beginning of a new academic year; however, the student will need to show his or her current Award Letter to the department to verify that his or her level of eligibility either meets or exceeds the figures listed above. Once eligibility is re-confirmed, the student may continue to submit timesheets for work study hours.
This
timesheet was designed to be filled out electronically. The hours will automatically be totaled.
Timesheet Instructions:
Timesheets are DUE at the end of each pay period (refer to the
payroll calendar) to Wendy Hoopes no later than Friday at 12 noon. Timesheets submitted after the deadline may need to be resubmitted in the following payroll cycle. If you submit a late timesheet, please obtain a green timecard from the
Department of Payroll, fill it out, and submit it to Wendy Hoopes for signature.
* Students cannot log more than 8 hours per day and are only paid for required field hours.
* If working longer than a 6-hour day, a 30 minute lunch break must be taken before the 5th hour of work. (If you are working 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., you must take a lunch by 1:00 p.m.).
