Office of diversity
Loma Linda University is committed to the principles of wholeness and quality education of which diversity is an integral part. At LLU, diversity speaks to the importance of building relationships and cooperation among the various groups on campus. It means that all groups--regardless of their ethnicity, culture, gender, religion, and physical condition--are valued, appreciated, and included. The diversity program at LLU has a strong spiritual focus and is consistent with the historic wholeness mission of LLU.In order to achieve these goals, diversity principles need to be understood and practiced in all aspects of campus life. By so doing, LLU can best serve the needs of its diverse constituency that includes matriculating students, faculty, staff, numerous alumni and the surrounding community. The office of diversity, led by the director of diversity and special assistant to the president, is a key part of this service to the diverse members of our student body.
The responsibilities of the office are both broad and specific. In the broadest sense, the office assists the University community in developing and facilitating understanding and appreciation for the benefits that result from practicing the principles of diversity in the LLU context. In this context, the LLU office of diversity coordinates the campus-wide program in cooperation with the administration, deans, and diversity committees in each of the schools. More specifically, the office of diversity assists faculty, staff, and students in appreciating and relating constructively with others in the University community who come from different backgrounds than their own. Therefore, the office of diversity is actively involved in providing leadership in increasing sensitivity and developing helpful programming. The office of diversity is also especially responsible for services to minority students and faculty that are under-represented on campus. Such services include: coordination of minority organizations on campus such as Association of Latin American Students [ALAS], Asian Pacific Student Association [APSA], Black Health Professional Student Association [BHPSA], and professional forums for minority faculty; counseling; referrals relative to finances; academic and interpersonal issues; graduate and undergraduate linking programs; diversity training and development; conflict resolutions; mentoring program information; alumni information; and other special needs.
The office of diversity is located in
Magan Hall, room 103, phone (909) 558-4787 or extension 44787. Students and
faculty seeking information and/or assistance in these areas are encouraged to
contact the office of diversity.
