A growing number of the library's resources are web-based, accessible from computer terminals with web access throughout the world. The purpose of this research guide is to assist LLU distance education students in the United States make the most of the Del E. Webb Memorial Library's web site <http://www.llu.edu/llu/library>.
Library password:
You will be prompted for the following information when you attempt to access LLU restricted information from the web site, including databases and online journals:
- Your name as printed on your student ID card (or on your LLU registration paperwork if you have not been issued a student ID card)
- The barcode number printed on your LLU student ID card (or if you have not been issued a student ID card, as distributed by program coordinator)
- Your PIN number (a code you select the first time you login)
You can change your password by logging in to the "My account" option at the top right corner of the library's web site, <http://www.llu.edu/llu/library>. Contact your LLU program coordinator if you forget your barcode number and do not have a student ID card.
Bibliographic databases:
These databases are used to identify articles and books on a specific topic. Click on the "Databases" button from the library's web site <http://www.llu.edu/llu/library>. You will be prompted for your library login and password at this point. The databases with full-text included in the databases are indicated on the screen.
Library catalog:
The library catalog lists which books and journals the library owns, including online full-text journals and books. Click on the "Library catalog" button from the library's web site <http://www.llu.edu/llu/library>. When online access is available, a full-text link will be present at the individual record level. You will be prompted for your library login and password to access most full-text resources available through the catalog.
Search assistance:
Reference librarians are available perform literature searches. Click on the "Library services" button from the library's web site <http://www.llu.edu/llu/library>. Select the "Free literature searches" option, complete the form and submit the request. A librarian will search your topic, find related references and email back the results.
Reference support:
A reference librarian is available for questions using the toll-free number listed below. The desk is staffed from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, Pacific Time. Reference support during the summer and holidays vary. If you call during a time the reference desk is closed, leave a message on the answering machine. Reference questions may also be submitted by email to the address below.
Interlibrary loan:
Interlibrary loan service is available.
- Request a book Many books in the library's catalog may be mailed to you. Connect to the catalog, as described above, to see which books the library owns. To request a book, click on the Interlibrary Loan link on the library's web site and select "book." In the "Special Instructions" field, indicate that you are a distance education student and provide your mailing address. You will be asked to provide the bar code number on your LLU ID card. Return all books by the due date given. Books must be returned via insured mail to the following address: Interlibrary Loan, Del E. Webb Memorial Library, 11072 Anderson St., Loma Linda, CA 92350-0001.
- Request an article If the library owns the article, the fee is $.10 per page. If the library does not own the article the fee is typically $11.00 +tax. Some articles not owned by the library may be available for $.10 per page. Fees incurred can be charged to your student account. To request an article, click on the interlibrary loan link on the library's web site and select "article." In the "special instructions" field, indicate that you are an off-campus student and provide your mailing address. You will be asked to provide the bar code number on your LLU ID card.
