What is bibliographic instruction?
Bibliographic instruction introduces students to the basic sources and library research strategies needed for a specific course or assignment.* The presentations, given by the liaison librarians, are tailor made to correspond to the assignments in a particular course. The liaison librarian will discuss the needs of the class with the instructor and then prepare a presentation. The presentation may include introduction or in-depth instruction on 1) PubMed and other databases; 2) electronic full-text sources; 3) library services and collections; 4) the Library Online Catalog; and 5) use of reference books and other library materials pertinent to the class.
Liaison librarians also consult with faculty in developing relevant and effective library assignments and obtaining appropriate library material.
Individual and small group consultation on any research-related question or information need is available by appointment with your librarian.
Why bibliographic instruction?
Cover basicsAllowing the liaison librarian to address the class as a whole should answer the students' most basic questions, e.g. what sources to use, how to use them, and where they are located. This enables the students to begin research on their own and allows the librarians at the reference desk to help students with specific problems as they arise.
Reduce fearSome students are reluctant to ask for assistance. The bibliographic instruction sessions encourage students to ask for help by introducing them to the liaison librarian who knows about their assignment. Students should also be able to express their information needs more accurately and confidently after participation in a bibliographic instruction session. The session will not answer all their questions. It will, however, make it easier for them to ask a better question.
Improve communicationCommunication is improved between students, librarians, and instructors when all get together to discuss ways of gathering information that will satisfy a course assignment. It also helps the librarians determine what additional sources are needed in the library to meet student and faculty needs.
Increase efficiencyAfter a bibliographic instruction session, students should be able to retrieve information more efficiently and with less frustration. Our aim is to improve the quality of their coursework and increase their independence in learning.
Planning for bibliographic instruction
Classes should be scheduled as far in advance as possible. Timing the session to coincide with the assignment is crucial to student motivation. To schedule a presentation, call your
liaison librarian. The librarian will need to know the details about your class assignment, when it is due, what sources you feel should be included, and when you would like the class scheduled.
Faculty participationFaculty members are encouraged to attend the session. Students are more motivated if the instructor demonstrates an interest in the program by attending. Communication is improved when the instructor is present to add comments, ask questions about sources to increase students' understanding, and answer questions about the assignment. Since new sources are constantly added the the library's collection, attending the session keeps the instructor informed about sources the students will encounter.
